Single mom from Tagum City wins 42K marathon in South Korea

A 33-year-old single mother from Tagum City, Davao del Norte won the recent women's 42-kilometer event of the Jeju International Tourism Marathon Festival in South Korea.
Judelyn Miranda, a mother of a 10-year-old son beat other runners around the globe to win the prestigios international marathon race.
Miranda, who works as a security guard at Tagum City Hall won 300,000 Korean won and P25,000 from 7-Eleven as champion's purse in South Korea.
The veteran runner clocked three hours, 16 minutes and three seconds, while the runner-up came from Cavite and the third place went to an
entry from South Korea.
Miranda got the slot to carry the name of the Philippines in the marathon race after she won the the 1st 7-Eleven Run 2018 Davao.
She said her son inspired her to run fast and win the race.
Miranda said she will share her prize money to her family and friends.
Prior to her international marathon win, Miranda regularly competes in every fun run events being held in Davao City and nearby areas.

Body builder from Maa wins Subic body building contest

A 30-year-old veteran body builder from Dampa, Magtuod, Maa, Davao City won one of the categories in the Muscle Beach Asia 2018 last May 27 in Subic, Zambales.
Lionelo Sigue of  Pulse85 Fitness Play Ground beat 59 other body builder all over the Philippines to win the  novice division of the national body building contest.
Sigue is very happy with his championship since it is the first time he won the top prize after many tries in various body building tournament.
The win is also extra-sweet for Sigue since he also got the slot to represent the Philippines in the international NAC World 2018 Championships slated on June 2 at the IC3 Convention Center in Cebu City.
Now that he gets to represent the country, Sigue vowed to do his best in the interational body building contest.
Sigue also thanked his family and gym staff for his breakout win.

Tim Cone says Scottie Thompson is Ginebra's most popular player today

No less than Barangay Ginebra coach Tim Cone admitted former Agro Sailor and Padada, Davao del Sur native Scottie Thompson is the most popular player of the team today.
In a recent talk with reporters, Cone said Thompson has the support and love of most Ginebra fans today.
“Everybody loves the way he plays. He’s great guy on and off the court. He has become our team’s most popular player and for good reasons. Fans cherish him,” Cone told InterAksyon.
“They love to see competitor and Scottie is a competitor in the truest sense of the word.”
In his PBA career, Thompson has already caught the hearts of many Ginebra fans. In fact, along with Gin Kings legend Bal David, Thompson has one of the top-selling Ginebra jerseys according to reports from the Ginebra marketing office.
It’s easy to understand why. Despite his 6’1” frame, Thompson has become an epitome the team’s “never-say-die” attitude.
Thompson is only 24, but Cone has already called him one of the best rebounding guards he has ever seen. His offensive skills are still unpolished, but there is little doubt about him becoming Ginebra’s next superstar.

Players who will represent Davao City in Kadayawan hoopfest will be announced soon


The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) are set to release the 18 players who will carry the name of Davao City in the 2018 Kadayawan Festival Invitational Basketball Tournament in August.
The Davao-Go-Duterte selection team are set to compete against three UAAP (University Athletic Association of the Philippines) teams in the annual basketball tournament.
Former De La Salle University coaching staff Miggy Solitaria said they are now in the final stages of their selection process after the two tryouts they held at the  Genesis 88 Gym last May 19-20.
Solitaria said they will pick players who are relentless,easy to teach, has good character and diciplined.
He said the lucky players will get monthly salary from SBP.
Moreover, Solitaria said after the tournament, the SBP management lead by SBP regional director and board of trustee Glenn Escandor will look at the players performance for them to be part of the Davao City team in the next season of Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League.

4 Davao City call center companies enters semis of Inter-BPO basketball league

Four  business process outsourcing (BPO) teams in Davao City will slug it out in the semifinals of the Davao Inter-BPO League (DIBL) Season 3 basketball tournament on May 27 at the Rizal Memorial Colleges (RMC) Event Center.
The four teams who will fight it out in the semifinals are  VXI Global, Alorica, Flatworld Solutions and Awesome OS.
The first game at around 1 p.m. features VXI Global versus Alorica.
The second game pits Awesome OS and Flatworld Solutions at 2 p.m.
VXI Global reached the semifinals after beating  Conectys 55-33 behind the 21 points scoring of Romeo Nayve.
Alorica beat Convergys 49-35 in the other quarterfinal game.
The winners in the semifinals will face off in the championship round.
The tournament is sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Davao Chapter and sponsored by Sweet Gracias Cafe,
Borromeo Insurance Agency of Pru Life UK, Ramenikko Ramen Hause and Phenom Lifestyle Fitness Gym.

Cabantian National High School wins Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) 3x3 national finals

A 3x3  girls basketball team from Davao City ruled the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) 3x3 national finals at the Robinson's Mall in Malate, Manila last May 20.
The Cabantian National High School (CNHS) beat the favored National Capital Region (NCR) South 21-11 to win the coveted 3x3 girls baasketball title.
The team from Buhangin, Davao City are composed of Marcilla Grace Dellosa, Ainos Queen Bacena, Fave Roxyl Lugasan, and Christie Bariquit.
The team coached by Marvin Ace Sencio earier beat heavy-favorite NCR North in the semifinals 21-20.
The young team also beat Ilocos Region  13-9 in the quarterfinals.
Sencio is very happy with their win since they were able to beat some of the best teams in the Philippines.

1 soldier died, 4 others badly injured in landmine blast in Mabini

One soldier died and four other badly injured when a landmine allegedly planted by the New People's Army exploded in Sitio Patawon, Mampalosong, Mabini, Comval Province early morning of May 22.
The name of the dead soldier is not yet available as of the moment.
The four wounded persons were identified as  Roy Anovejas, Roger Bilas, Daniel Fabular, Amaresca and Tumol.
The wounded victims are now being treated at the Davao Regional Medical Center (DRMC) in Tagum City, Davao del Norte.
Authorities are still conducting a deeper investigation on the incident as of press-time.

Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur lady boxer wins boxing gold in Russia

A 26-year-old female amateur boxer from Tuban, Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur has won the gold medal in the women's 57 kilograms division of the 10th International Boxing Tournament in Honor of Konstantin Korotkov in Russia Sunday, May 20.
Nesthy Alcayde Petecio beat Pakistani opponent Li Ok Byol, 4-1, in their championship
bout to win the gol medal.
Before reaching the championship bout, Petecio beat perennial tormentor Chinese Yin Junhua, a Rio Olympics silver medalist, in the semifinals.
Petecio, who started his amateur boxing career in Davao City is very happy with his win since it is her third straight gold medals in boxing.
She earlier won the 1st Indian Open International Boxing Tournament in February and in the XXXV International Felis Stamm Tournament for Elite Men and Women in Warsaw, Poland in March.
With her string of wins, Petecio vowed to train harder to win more gold medals for the Philippines.

Davao City will host 2018 Rebisco Volleyball League Regional Finals girls 18 and below

Some of the promising young volleyball players in region 11 are set to compete in the  2018 Rebisco Volleyball League Regional Finals girls 18 and below in Davao City this June 2 to 4.
The winners in regional finals will carry the flag of Southern Mindanao in the National Finals slated this November at the Ynares Sports Complex in Pasig City against other regional champions and two other international teams.
Guesting before the weekly  Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum held at the Annex of SM City Davao, Southern Mindanao coordinator Abet Beran said before the regional finals a qualifying leg in Mati City on May 21-22; Digos City on May 23-24; Tagum City on May 25-26; and Davao City on May 27-30 will be held.
Abe revealed they conducted the tournament to open more doors and avenue for marginalized sectors such as the out-of-school-youth and other local talents to unveil their volleyball skills.
He is confident that many teams will join the tournament and that the winner in the regional finals will play well in the national finals before the end of 2018.

Davao Occidental Tigers Wins MPBL Pre-Season Tourney

A Mindanao based team has emerged as champion in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) pre-season tournament last May 12 in General Santos City.
Davao Occidental Tigers who is one of the new teams in MPBL in its next season which kicks off on June 12 beat Manila Stars 118-115 to win the MPBL pre-season crown.
The team coached by Don Dulay is very happy with their crown and he is confident of their chances in the next MPBL season.
Guesting before the weekly Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum held at The Annex of SM City Davao, in Ecoland, Davao City Dulay said his team are all Filipino and most of whom came from Mindanao.
The team are composed of  Davao City players team captain Louie Medalla, prized bigmen
Jay Cabañog and Ronald Lamocha,Mikko Estrellante, Don Adormeo and Bob Ombecan, former PBA player Leo Najorda, Manuelito Osabel, Leo Paller, Paul Siarot, Edrian Lao,
Emman Calo, Bogs Raymundo, Billy Robles, Mario Leonidas and Joseph Terso.
Aside from Dulay the assisstant coaches are Rob Wainright and Arvin Bonleon.
To further prepare for the next MPBL conference the team will  fly to Cebu City and Manila for some tune-up games.

Absalon Serrano is Datba bowler of the year

Davao City based bower Absalon "Rommy" Serrano is a proud man these days after he was declared as the  2017 bowler of the year after winning the annual Davao Tenpin Bowlers Association
(Datba) Bowler of the Year Tournament Sunday evening at the SM Lanang Premier Bowling Center.
Serrano, 59 won the bowlfest after scoring  1,592 pins after eight games.
The Bowler of the Year is a yearly tournament featuring 12 players vying for
the title. The participants in the tournament are the monthly champions of Datba sponsored tournament.
The second place went to Crystal Chavez.
Chavez scored 1,559 during the bowl out eliminations.
Serrano beat Chavez 196-180, in the step-the-ladder finals.

John Mark Sia wins Datba bowling tourney at SM Lanang Premier

Davao City based bowler John Mark Sia won P1,200 after winning the Davao Tenpin Bowlers Association weekly qualifying bowling tournament held at the SM Lanang Premier Bowling Center in Lanang, Davao City over theweekend.
Sia who uses both hands playing bowling scored 863 pinfalls after four games to win the bowlfest organized by Datba.
The 17-year-old bowler is very happy with his win and now he trains his eyes on winning the Datba monthly finals now that he got a slot to compete in the monthly finals.
The second place went to Billy Magdale who won 800 after scoring 816 pinfalls after four games.
The third place went to AJ Galendez who won P500 after scoring 813 pinfalls after four games.

Dragons del Sur is over-all champion in Butuan competition

The winning streak of Davao City based dragon boat team Dragons Del Sur (DDS) is not about to end anytime soon.
DDS won one of the categories in the prestigious Bugsay Balangay: Bugsay Mindanao 5 Dragon Boat Competition in Butuan City over the weekend.
DDS beat nine other teams to win the mixed category title over Bugsay Marajao of Surigao City and Bakunawa Dragon Boat Team of Iligan City.
The oher teams who participated in the competition are the following: Philippine National Police Maritime of Manila, Aqua Fortis,
Gruppo Habagat of Cebu, Salties Leyteños Tacloban City, Bakunawa of Iligan City, FSUU Blue Dragons and Black Dragons of Butuan City and Kujaw Tiger Dragons, Bugsay Marajao of Surigao City, and Bugsay San Luis of Agusan.
The DDS women's team also won the silver medal in the women's category won by Bakunawa Dragon Boat Team.
With their great performace in the tournament, DDS was also declared as over-all champion.
Prior to their wins in Butuan City, DDS also performed well in the 12th Boracay International Dragon Boat Festival.
The team's next big competition is the dragon boat contest in the  Kadayawan sa Dabaw in August.

Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur lady boxer will compete in Russia

Mindanaoan female boxer Nesthy Alcayde Petecio is one of the members of the Philippine amateur boxing team who will compete in the Korotkov Memorial Tournament on May 15 to 20 in Russia.
Petecio, a native of Tuban in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur is expected to win the gold in the prestigious boxing tournamen.
Women's national boxing coach Nolito "Boy" Velasco said Petecio is on a winning streak as she has won back-to-back gold medals.
She was women's 54-57 kilograms featherweight champion in the 1st Indian Open International Boxing Tournament held in February this year then she also clinched the women's 57-kg title in the XXXV International Felis Stamm Tournament for Elite Men and Women in Warsaw, Poland in March.
Velasco, the  brother of Olympics boxing silver medalist Mansueto "Onyok" Velasco said Petecio's participation in Russia is also part of her preparation for the Asian Games.
He said if luck permits, they also hope Petecio to make it in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Velasco said that her weight division is entered in the Olympics.
The others members of the Philippine boxing team that will compete in Russia are the following:Carlo Paalam, Marvin Tabamo, Mario Fernandez, James Palicte, Joel Bacho, Eumir Marcia and Aira Villegas.

John Tamondong wins Datba bowling tourney at SM Lanang Premier

Davao City based bowler John Tamondong won P1,200 after winning the Davao Tenpin Bowlers Association  weekly qualifying bowling tournament title on Saturday
evening at the SM Lanang Primier Bowling Center.
Tamondong beat 24 other professional bowlers in Davao City to win the crown after scoring 852 pinfalls after four games.
The second place went to Gab Velasco, the Datba qualifying tournament winner last week.
Velasco scored 836 pinfalls to win P800 cash for his feat.
The third place went to AJ Galendez who won P500 after scoring 832 pinfalls in the tournament.

Tagum cops makes round of 12 in recent FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Manila Open


Two young lady police officers from Tagum City Police Office have played well in the recent FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Manila Open, dubbed as the biggest international beach volleyball event to be held in Philippine shores, which will be held last May 3-6 at the SM Sands By The Bay.
The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour is the worldwide professional beach volleyball tournament for both men’s and women’s competition organized by the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB).
PO1s Karen Quilario and Lourdilyn Catubag has reached he round of 12 in the biggest beach volleyball tournament in the history of the Philippines.
Catubag and Quilario edged Hong Kong team of Ting Chi Yuen and Wai Yan Au Yuneg, 21-13, 18-21, 15-11, in Pool C to secure three points after a 1-1 win-loss record.
The duo lost their opening match against the Netherlands’ Katja Stam and Julia Wouters, 21-14, 21-11.
The police officers got the slot to represent the Philippines after they successfully  defended their Beach Volleyball Republic National Championship crown in Dagupan City Pangasinan in a dominating fashion.
Quilario and Catubag earlier defended their crown without any single loss in the prestigious national beach volleyball tournament which features some of the top beach volleyball players in the Philippines.
Quilario and Catubag  swept the group stage, 3-0, before making quick work of Charo Soriano and Bea Tan in the women's division semifinals, 21-12, 21-14.
The Davao police officers then repeated over Iloilo's Jackie Estoquia and DM Demontano in the Final, scoring a convincing 21-10, 21-14 victory.
It's the second straight BVR National title for Catubag and Quilario after also handling business in 2017 in Cagayan.
Soriano and Tan won third place.

Davao City reach quarterfinals of NOFA Cup in Bacolod City

A team from Davao City has reached the quarterfinals of the tough Negros Oriental Football Associaon (NOFA) Cup at Sta. Maria Football Field, Bacolod City last May 2-5.
The 12 and under team who are mostly made up of players from Southshied Football Club finished the national football tournament with a record of three wins and two defeats.
The team coached by Ewee De Leon are made up of Popoy Lagundi, Gelo Lacerna, AJ Guingguing, Art Eroy, Gerardo Coronado, Zyk Lopez, Brendl Medina, Josh Agulo, Joaquin Suarez,Mavy Canton, Miguel Jao, Karl Sumampong,Eric Salumbides Jr., Jerome Vidal, Kim Naga, EJ Cabiles, Charles Kenn Chiu,Anthony Elorde, Yuan Guinguing, and Kian Niu.
Asisstant coach Jefferson Manzanares is very happy with the performance of the team against some of the top football teams in the Philippines.
Carlo Chiu, the president of Southshield said the team hopes to compete again in the same prestigious tournament next year.

Davao Jones Academy, Cabantian gets slot in SBP Tatluhan national finals in Metro Manila

The Davao Jones Academy (DJA) and Cabantian National High School (CNHS) cagebelles are set to represent Davao City in the 2018 Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) 3x3 under 18 Regional Finals dubbed as "Ang Pambansang Tatluhan" in Metro Manila later this month.
The two Davao City based schools got the slot to the finals after they earlier won the Regional
Finals for the boys and girl's category respectively Friday afternoon at the Rizal Memorial Colleges (RMC) Event Center.
For the second straight year, DJA won the boy's crown after they beat  Emar Human and Environmental College 21-11, in the finals.
Mark Bacalso scored 11 points in the finals to tow DJA to the crown.
The team coached by Jimmy Colicot is eyeing the SBP national title this year after they only finished as second placer last year behind champion Calabarzon who beat them 20-21.
The other members of the champion team are the following: Bling Murillo, John Lloyd Kinatagcan and John Dave Palero Sumampong.
Meanwhile, CNHS will represent Davao City in the girl's category after they beat Daniel R. Aguinaldo National High School (DRANHS) Team B 8-5 in the finals.
CNHS coach Marvin Sencio said his girls will do their best to show a good performance in the national finals.

This Davao City awarded humanitarian deserve your vote in Barangay Maa

If there is one person that deserve a vote in the May 14, 2018 local and SK elections in Barangay Maa, Davao City that person would be Ricky Umbana.
Umbana , 59 who is running for barangay councilor is a person who spend more than half of his life serving people in his barangay especially the prisoners inside the Davao City jail.
A native of Barobo, Surigao del Sur this long-time member of COuples for Christ in Davao City has helped a lot of people in his barangay.

Because of oustanding work in his barangay, Umbana given an award by Davao City for outstanding work in the community.
Umbana, a father of three children got the award for his kind works to the prisoners inside the Davao City jail in Barangay Maa.
In 2012 Umbana, CFC and Gaward Kalinga were awarded by the city with a plaque for making a difference in the community for constructing houses for female prisoners inside the city jail.
Also awarded by the city that time were Davao Light and Power Company, NCCC, Dizon Farms, Davao City Water District among others.


No less than Davao City mayor Sarah Duterte bestowed the award to Umbana and the other awardees.
Umbana was a huge help in the construction of houses inside the female detainees compound because he is the CFC Prison Ministry Coordinator since the year 2000.
Umbana has a deep heart for prisoners because he believes helping them could make them more happy and hopeful in life.

Davao City women's dragon boat team wins big in Boracay dragon boat race

A Davao City based women's dragon boat team has brought honors to the city after winning medals and trophies in the recent 12th Boracay International Dragon Boat Festival.
Dragos del Sur Dragon Boat Team Women's Crew won the second runner up feat in the 200m sprint event where speed is tested.
The team also won the third runner-up honorin the endurance-tester 500m event.
A team from Australia and Manila ruled the 200m and 500m events, respectively.
The team made up of 13 members are composed of Clarice Jane Calolot with team captain Francesca Dianne Solis,Vanessa Bantilan, Glenda Andoy, Julian Morales, Apple Kay Tajo, Milagros de Lumban, Sheila Mae Laud, Carina Laurente, Esther Marie Singson, Mae Fe Faustino, Elizabeth Ornopio and Naomi Omos.
Guesting before the weekly  Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum held at the Annex of SM City Davao, Solis said they are happy with their win because it is the first time they joined an international dragon boat race.
Calolot for her part said their team could have emerged champion in the tournament if they only trained consistently.
With their recent win, the team is now focussed in their next stop the Bugsay Mindanao that will be
hosted by Butuan City this May 12.
Both Solis and Calolot said the team will do their best to become champion in the race.
Aside from the Butuan City dragon boat contest, the team is also  set to defend their title in the second Kadayawan Festival National Dragon Boat Competition this coming August.

Davao City high school jins played well in 2018 National PRISAA in Bohol

The Davao City High School boys and girls taekwondo teams has stomped their class in the recent National Private School Athletic Association
(Prisaa) held in Tagbilaran City, Province of Bohol.
Davao City won a total of six gold medals, three silvers and two bronzes in the kyorugi (sparring) event.
The Davao City girl's team also emerged as over-all champion in the tournament after they won four gold medals against some of the top young jins in the Philippines.
The gold medals winners for Davao City were the following: Kelly Lada, Megan Alexandria Macla, Vierra Trixia Limoran, Trecia Mae Onato, Jan Ellyze Delos Reyes and Rodrigo Masgon.
Lada retained her girls featherweight title while Macla won the girls fly weight division.
Limoran, for her part, won the girls bantam weight division as Onato won over her rivals in the girls lightweight
class.
Delos Reyes and Masgon wonn the boys featherweight and heavyweight golds, respectively.

Davao City will host Palarong Pambansa, National PRISAA in 2019

Mark your calendar guys 2019 will be a big year for Davao City as far as sports is concerned.
Aside from the Palarong Pambansa, Davao City will also host the National Private School Athletic Association (Prisaa) Games.
Prisaa 11 president Ma. Lita Montalban hoped Davao City mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio will support the national hosting next year.
Montalan who is also National Prisaa President also hoped Davao City will grab the over-all championship next year.
She along with the National Prisaa Board will meet in June in Davao City and will pay a courtesy call on the mayor.
Meanwhile, Davao City finished third overall in the just-concluded National Private School Athletic Association (Prisaa) Games 2018 held in Tagbilaran City, Bohol.
FROM fifth last year in Zambales, the Davao Region Prisaa finished third overall in the just-concluded National
Private School Athletic Association (Prisaa) Games 2018 held in Tagbilaran City, Bohol.
After the week-long competition, Davao City got 83 gold medals, 76 silvers and 106 bronzes. Western Visayas was overall champion with 219 golds,
110 silvers and 107 bronzes.
Central Visayas grabbed the runner-up honors by hauling 194 golds, 92 silvers and 73 bronzes.


Davao City honor this man's effort of selfless service to prisoners

For offering a selfless effort of service to prisoners of Davao City jail in Barangay Maa, Davao City, the city government of Davao lauded and honored the worthwhile deed of Ricky Umbana.
Umbana, 59 was given an award by Davao City for outstanding work in the community.
Umbana, a resident of Barangay Maa, Davao City got the award for his kind works to the prisoners inside the Davao City jail in Barangay Maa.

Quilario and Catubag  swept the group stage, 3-0, before making quick work of Charo Soriano and Bea Tan in the women's division semifinals, 21-12, 21-14.
The Davao police officers then repeated over Iloilo's Jackie Estoquia and DM Demontano in the Final, scoring a convincing 21-10, 21-14 victory.
It's the second straight BVR National title for Catubag and Quilario after also handling business in 2017 in Cagayan.
Soriano and Tan won third place.
Aside from the two police officers, the other representatives of the Philippines in the tournament are  Jackie Estoquia and DM Demontaño of Team Ilo-Ilo, and Charo Soriano and Bea Tan of Seafront Residences, and the pair of Dzi Gervacio and Sisi Rondina.
The Women’s Division will have the main draw right away that will be composed of 16 teams, four of which is from the Philippines.
A cash prize of $10,000 and tourney points for qualification in other FIVB beach volley tourneys awaits the winner of the intense action in the sands that will be contested by a total of 32 teams in the Men’s and Women’s Division from 23 participating countries.
