Leading the way for these cagers is PBA legend Alvin "Robocop" Teng, who played in the PBA for 14 seasons and helped San Miguel Beer win some of its championships in the oldest basketball league in Asia.

Teng, was a late bloomer in basketball, having only started in 1983 while playing for the Rizal Memorial College in his hometown.

After a year with the RMC, Alvin enrolled at the Harvardian University in Davao, where he also played for the school team. He soon made it to a selection of DavaoeƱos which participated in the PABL Founder's Cup. Thus was his first taste of commercial ball-playing in the Big City.

While playing for the All-Stars, Alvin was spotted by Arellano team manager and then PABL president Peter Cayco and was promptly recruited to the Flaming Arrows' bench. After enrolling in a management course in Arellano, he played for seven months with the varsity squad before closing out the 1984 PABL season with the ITM team. Teng played for Lagerlite Beer the following year and in September 1986, he was elevated to the pros, along with Magnolia teammate Jeffrey Graves, when the SMC ballclub decided to return to the PBA after a two-conference leave.

Aside from Teng, Mark Cagoco, a former Holy Cross of Davao College Crusader also got recruited and played for Jose Rizal University in the NCAA.

Recently, George Diamante Jr., also a resident of Barangay San Antonio helped the  Letran Squires win its two successive NCAA high basketball championships.

In Davao City, a cutting-edge vocational training center opens

Craft Learning Hub Training facility is a dynamic facility for skill enhancement training and assessment, located in Davao City.

Craft Learning Hub President Albert Lumanlan, Executive Vice President Mike Trinidad, and Center Administrator Kristina Libang led the institution's blessing and inaugural ceremony on Monday, March 18, at the Grandland Building in R. Castillo.

The City Government of Davao was represented by distinguished Councilors Tek Ocampo, Bonz Militar, Sweet Advincula, and Louie Bongguyan.

In a written message, Mayor Sebastian Duterte congratulates the Craft Learning Hub and Training Center on its grand opening in Davao City. He says that the cutting edge vocational training center and learning hub will encourage people from all backgrounds to acquire specialized skills, improve their capabilities, and seize new opportunities for their personal and professional growth.

"Let us celebrate the opening of these facilities and the beginning of endless possibilities and dreams for Dabawenyos to embrace the chances that await us, let us work hand in hand in building a resilient and progressive community, Daghang salamat," Duterte's message read.

The launch of the Craft Learning Hub, according to Councilor Ocampo, will strengthen and supplement Davao City's current training facilities and educational institutions by offering chances for skill development and self-empowerment.

With an eye toward future partnerships and cooperative projects that will benefit Dabawenyos, Ocampo and the other Councilors reaffirm their support for the recently established organization. On behalf of himself and his partners, Lumanlan expressed his sincere appreciation to everyone, but especially to the driving force behind the establishment of the training center and learning hub.

"I extend my deepest gratitude to all those who have contributed to bringing this vision to life, the instructors, the staff, the partners, and, most importantly, you, our cherished stakeholders, together, let us embark on a voyage of discovery, innovation, and endless possibility" Lumanlan, in his speech, said.

Senators Want a Probe on Alleged Discrepancies in the MILF Decommissioning Process

Recently, senators questioned the alleged "discrepancy" in the quantity of weapons that former fighters for the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) had surrendered as part of the peace agreement that the government and the separatist rebels had made. Sen. Jinggoy Estrada, who was presiding over a Senate national defense committee meeting, gave Presidential Peace Adviser Carlito Galvez Jr. instructions to submit a report on the progress of the MILF's armed wing, the Bangsamoro Islamic Armed Forces (BIAF), deactivation process.

Sen. Imee Marcos made the observation that, since the government and MILF signed the Comprehensive Agreement on Bangsamoro in 2014, which ultimately resulted in the establishment of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) in 2019, only 12,000 of the approximately 40,000 BIAF fighters had been rendered inactive.

The decommissioning of the BIAF started following the establishment of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority, the BARMM's temporary governing body made up primarily of former MILF officials.

However, Marcos stated that she observed that 26,132 former BIAF fighters only turned in 4,625 firearms overall, receiving P100,000 in cash assistance in exchange for giving up their weapons.

In addition, "some of those who surrendered looked too old to be combatants," according to Marcos. Sen. Raffy Tulfo claimed that discrepancies in the quantity of weapons turned in and disarmed by MILF rebels demonstrated anomalies in the decommissioning procedure carried out by the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity.

"Coming from a country that just recently started the development of the sport, it became my mission to represent SAMBO in my country, the Philippines, and the Southeast Asia region. I applied for a position in the Athlete's Commission as a member back in 2019 because I was inspired by my predecessor, Mrs. Laure Fournier - a great athlete, an eloquent speaker, and a fantastic mentor. SAMBO has given me great opportunities to develop not only my athletic career but also helped me in my personal growth as an individual," Tancontian said.

"Now that I will be chairing this commission, it's my responsibility to create friendships and a safe space for my fellow athletes to speak up and voice their thoughts so that the sport will continue to grow and thrive through the athletes' voices," Tancontian added.

Tancontian is a three-time bronze medallist in the plus 80 kg division at the world championships and won a gold medal in the 2022 Asian tournament.

Tancontian, who graduated from the University of Santo Tomas with a Science in Fitness and Sports Management degree, will serve as chairperson of the International Sambo Federation (FIAS) Executive Committee.

Tancontian expressed gratitude to the Philippine Sports Commission, FIAS, and President Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino of the Philippine Olympic Committee for supporting the sport in the nation. (Romeo Braceros Jr.)
