DAVAO CITY — International Master (IM) Christian Gian Karlo Tade-Arca, a rising chess star from Mindanao, added another feather to his cap after winning the silver medal in the Under-18 Open Standard category of the prestigious ASEAN Age Group Chess Championships 2025, held from July 1 to 8 at the Berjaya Hotel in Penang, Malaysia.

At just 16 years old, Arca proved once again why he is one of the Philippines' most promising young chess talents. Representing the country with pride, he fought his way through a tough field of regional contenders to reach the final round with a golden opportunity within his grasp.

Needing only a draw in his final game to secure the gold medal in the U18 category, Arca made the bold decision to go for a win. His goal: to become the overall champion in the combined U18 and U20 Open division — a feat that would have automatically granted him a Direct International Master (IM) title.

Despite falling short after a hard-fought loss in the last round, Arca’s runner-up finish remains a remarkable achievement on the international stage, showcasing his competitive spirit, courage, and deep love for the game.

The National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP), under the leadership of Cong. Malita Native Elwin Retanal Scores Perfect 7-0 to Win FIDE Rapid Chess Tournament in Saudi Arabia

 

Malita, Davao Occidental native National Master (NM) Elwin Retanal delivered a stunning performance to win the 2nd Only Move International FIDE Rated Rapid Chess Tournament held at Alfaisal University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, early Sunday morning (Philippine time).

Retanal completed a perfect 7.0 out of 7 points in the Swiss-system tournament, sweeping all his matches against top-caliber international opponents.

The former 1997 Philippine Junior Chess Champion opened his campaign with wins over Yousuf Omar Gharib, Balamurugan Rithita, and Arena International Master Nasser Asain. He then outclassed Jordanian Master Ghayth Ababneh and Saudi Olympiad team member Mohammed Alaqeel Abdulaziz in the next two rounds.

Retanal’s impressive run continued with back-to-back victories over Egyptian Grandmaster Abdelrahman Hesham and FIDE Master Hatem Eldesoky to seal the championship.

His unbeaten run earned him the tournament’s top prize of 6,000 Saudi Riyal, equivalent to around P90,500.

Arena Grand Master (AGM) Rowelyn Joy Acedo was recently recognized as one of the Outstanding OFWs in Dubai for 2025 during the Philippine Independence Day celebration in the United Arab Emirates on June 12.

Acedo, known for her brilliance in chess, has long been a prominent figure in the Philippine chess community. A former chess scholar of De La Salle University, she has carved a name for herself by winning numerous local, national, and international tournaments throughout her career. Mindanaoan Teen FM Christian Arca Wins 2025 Quang Ninh International Master Chess Tournament in Vietnam

 

HALONG CITY, VIETNAM — Rising Filipino chess star and Mindanaoan prodigy FIDE Master (FM) Christian Gian Carlo Arca claimed the championship title at the prestigious 2025 Quang Ninh International Master Tournament, held from June 6 to 12 in Halong City, Vietnam.

Arca scored an impressive 6 points out of 9 games, showcasing a consistent and strategic performance that saw his live rating climb to 2409, a significant milestone for the young master.

As champion, Arca took home a trophy, medal, token, and USD 200 in cash, adding to his growing list of international accomplishments.

Panabo City’s pride, Fide Master (FM) Christian Gian Karlo Arca, added another feather to his cap by clinching two silver medals at the 18th Asian Schools Chess Championships, held from December 1-12, 2024, in Bangkok, Thailand.

Arca delivered an impressive performance in the standard Under 17 category, securing second place after nine intense rounds. In the final round, FM Arca held FM Bolat Inayat of Kazakhstan to a draw, concluding with 6.5 points. His score matched that of tournament winner Vladimir Yusukphodzhaev of FIDE but fell short due to tiebreak criteria. Throughout the competition, Arca showcased his skill with four victories and five draws, proving his mettle on the international stage.

Adding to his individual success, FM Arca contributed significantly to the Philippines' stellar team performance. Alongside National Master (NM) Oscar Joseph Cantela and Lemmuel Jay Adena, the boys’ team amassed 17 points to secure the silver medal in the overall team rankings. The Philippine squad finished just half a point behind China, the tournament champions with 17.5 points.

FIDE Master Christian Gian Karlo Arca Claims Gold in the Asian Rapid Chess Team Championship 2024

 

Fifteen-year-old FIDE Master (FM) Christian Gian Karlo Arca, a Grade 10 student of Panabo City National High School, achieved another remarkable victory by winning a gold medal in the Asian Rapid Chess Team Championship 2024 held in Hong Kong from August 21–25, 2024.

Under the guidance of Coach AGM Ramil Langamon and with the full support of Mr. Manuel M. Esperanza, School Principal, and Mr. Giovanni Gulanes, Department Head of the Davao del Norte Provincial Sports and Youth Development Office, Arca demonstrated his exceptional skills on the global stage.

Representing the Red Pseudodragons Team from Hong Kong, Arca, a resident of Panabo City, Davao del Norte, dominated Board 5 by securing 7 wins and 2 draws out of 9 rounds in the 11-round competition.

His stellar performance not only earned him first place individually but also contributed significantly to his team’s fifth-place finish in the team competition.

Arca's latest triumph adds to his growing list of accolades. He made headlines in November 2023 when he became the World Youth Chess Championship 2023 Open Blitz Champion in Italy.

His winning streak continued throughout 2024, where he clinched the championship in the Grandmaster Norm Tournament in Vietnam last May and secured gold medals in both the Asian Youth Chess Championship 2024 in Kazakhstan (June 9–21) and the Eastern Asian Youth Chess Championship 2024 in Malaysia (July 12–21), particularly in the Blitz Chess Competition.

Eugene Torre, Asia's first Grandmaster and Hall of Famer, will make the ceremonial moves to kick off the 2nd Gov. Henry S. Oaminal Open Chess Tournament on July 9-10 at AYA Hotel and Residences in Clarin, Misamis Occidental.

Joining Torre in the ceremony will be Gov. Henry S. Oaminal, Mayor Henry Oaminal Jr., and Rep. Sancho Fernando Oaminal. Top Filipino chess players, including International Masters Rolando Nolte and Ronald Bancod, FIDE Master Vince Alaan, and US Master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr., are expected to compete. Participants from Bukidnon, Misamis Oriental, Zamboanga, and neighboring cities will also join.

Clarin, Misamis Occidental - On July 9–10, chess enthusiasts will gather at the AYA Hotel and Residences for the 2nd Gov. Henry Oaminal Open Chess Tournament, offering a substantial cash prize pool of at least P355,000.

Organized by the Asenso Misamis Occidental Fiderated Chess Association (AMOFCA) in partnership with the Provincial Government of Misamis Occidental, the 2nd Congressional District Office, and local government units of Ozamis, this FIDE-rated rapid chess competition coincides with the 76th Anniversary of the City Charter and Nuestra Sra's Feast Dela Concepcion y del Triunfo de Migpangi.

The open champion stands to win P50,000, with P30,000, P20,000, P10,000, P5,000, and P3,000 awarded to second through sixth place. Seventh through tenth place finishers will receive P2,000 each, and P1,000 will go to each of the top 20 finishers.

On Thursday, June 20, 2024, Filipino teenage wonder Christian Gian Karlo Arca struck gold again, adding another significant victory to his expanding collection of victories. The Asian Youth Blitz Chess Championships 2024 - U16 was held in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

 With eight points from nine rounds, the remarkable 15-year-old FIDE Master from Panabo City, Davao del Norte finished alone in first place. Arca lost to Asman Bayantas of Kazakhstan in the fourth round after defeating Kirill Gusev of Russia, Kirill Tambovskii of Russia, and Goyal Daksh of India in the first three rounds, respectively.

En route to winning the coveted title, the incoming Grade 9 student of Dasmariñas Integrated High School won all of his remaining matches against FM Daniyal Sapenov of Kazakhstan in the ninth and final round, CM Dmitrii Suslov of Russia in the seventh round, CM Akbarali Abdukhakimov of Uzbekistan in the fifth round, and Truong Phu Pham of Vietnam in the sixth round.

 It was also his second major victory following his victory in a Grandmaster competition in Quang Ninh, Vietnam, last month, which helped him reach the second of the three standards needed to become an International Master (IM).

“It is always an honor for me to represent our country in the Asian Youth Blitz Chess Championships 2024 - U16 held in Almaty, Kazakhstan," said FM Arca.

Clarin, Misamis Occidental - On July 9–10, here at the AYA Hotel and Residences, the nation's best chess players will put their skills to the test in the 2nd Gov. Henry Oaminal Open Chess Tournament.

 The winners of the FIDE-rated rapid chess competition, which is being held by the Asenso Misamis Occidental Fiderated Chess Association (AMOFCA) in collaboration with the Provincial Government of Misamis Occidental, the 2nd Congressional District Office, and local government units of Ozamis, will receive a minimum of P355,000 in cash prize.

Conducted in conjunction with the 76th Anniversary of the City Charter and Nuestra Sra's Feast Dela Concepcion y del Triunfo de Migpangi.

The open champion of the competition will receive P50,000, P30,000, P20,000, P10,000, P5,000, and P3,000 will be awarded to the second through sixth place finishers, and P2,000 will be given to the seventh through tenth place finishers. P1,000 will be awarded to each of the top 20 finishers.

Misamis Occidental – In a remarkable initiative to engage the youth during summer vacation, Asenso Misamis Occidental is offering a free chess clinic for children across the province. The one-month summer camp aims to foster strategic thinking and mental discipline through the classic game of chess.

The chess clinic will be accessible in three key cities: Ozamiz, Oroquieta, and Tangub. These venues have been carefully chosen to ensure maximum participation and convenience for the children and their families.

The UAAP officiants awarded Ivo Nikolai Enot, a high school swimming scholar from Ateneo de Manila, Sara Dalagan, a high school chess scholar from National University, and Ruelle Canino, a high school chess scholar from Far Eastern University with the Athlete-Scholar Award.

Enot is a native of Davao City while Dalagan and Canino hail from Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental.

The three have shown that Mindanao-based scholars will not only excel in sports but in academics as well. (Romeo Braceros Jr.)

Panaboan wins Vietnam chess tourney

 Davao City---A 15-year-old Fide Master from Panabo City, Davao del Norte ruled the Quang Ninh GM2 tournament in Ha Long Ward, Ha Long City, Vietnam on Sunday.

In the final round, FM Christian Gian Karlo Arca, playing the black pieces, and Vietnamese Candidate Master (CM) Dau Khuong Duy settled for a draw after 67 moves of the Caro Kann Defense, advance variation.

With three victories and six draws, Arca finished the round-robin competition with 6.0 points and his second International Master (IM) norm.

In addition, he was content to settle for a draw in his matches against the following players: Singaporean IM Liu Xiangyi in Round 6, Filipino IM Michael Concio Jr. in Round 4, Filipino Grandmaster (GM) John Paul Gomez in Round 7, and Vietnamese Candidate Master (CM) Dinh Nho Kiet in Round 8.

In addition, he was content to settle for a draw in his matches against the following players: Singaporean IM Liu Xiangyi in Round 6, Filipino IM Michael Concio Jr. in Round 4, Filipino Grandmaster (GM) John Paul Gomez in Round 7, and Vietnamese Candidate Master (CM) Dinh Nho Kiet in Round 8.

He defeated the top-seeded player in the event, Vietnamese GM Tran Tuan Minh, in Round 5, Chinese IM Yiping Lou (Round 2) and Indonesian IM Azarya Jodi Setyaki (Round 3).

With 5.5 points, Kiet came in second, ahead of Minh (3.5), Concio and Dung (5.0), Gomez and Liu (4.5), Lou and Duy (4.0), and Jodi (3.0).

As of May, 1 Arca, a Dasmariñas Integrated High School student in Grade 9, will have an additional 2265 rating due to his gain of 62.8 ELO points.

A player needs to get the three norms across 27 or more games and a FIDE rating of 2400 or higher to become an IM.

A rating system called ELO determines a player's skill level.

Arca will next play in the 8th Eastern Asia Youth Chess Championship in Penang, Malaysia, from July 12 to 21, and the Hanoi GM Closed Tournament, which will place from May 21 to 26.(Romeo Braceros Jr,)

Bigger 2nd Warden chessfest brought again cheers to city jail prisoners and their kids

The recently concluded PSupt Ericley Louise D. Lazaro 2nd Warden's Rapid Chess Tournament held at The Annex events center of SM City Davao last April 14 did not only benefitted some of the top chess players in Mindanao but some of the persons deprived of liberty inside the male dormitory of the Davao City Jail in Barangay Maa, Davao City.

Part of the proceeds of the chessfest  supported by Senator Christopher "Bong" Go will go to 10 children of PDL as financial educational assistance.

The chess tournament was also officiated by APM composed of legendary Davaoeno arbiters Jojo Palero, Ely Acas, and Alfred Moulic.

PSupt Ericley Louise D. Lazaro, the jail warden of the male dormitory of the Davao City jail said 10 children of PDLs will receive some financial aid for their schooling.

In an earlier interview Lazaro, a native of Isabela City in Cagayan province revealed the PDLS who made the beautiful wooden trophies for the chessfest will also get compensated for their efforts.

Lazaro said he is very happy and proud with the result of the 2nd edition of his chess tournament since it yielded more participants and graced by some of the top chess players in Mindanao such as Dubai-based chess coach and Davaoeno Oliver Dimakiling who ruled the open division.

Panabo City-based and regular member of the para chess team of the Philippines Henry Lopez also joined the event.

Aglipay 8 Oberio of the Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos), the chess coached who helped IGACOS win four gold medals in the recent Davaraa 2024 also graced the event.

With the success of the chessfest, this early Lazaro said the third edition will be held in August in time for Kadayawan.(Romeo Braceros Jr.)
