A shining pride of Davao City has once again brought honor to the Philippines—not on the chessboard this time, but as an exemplary overseas Filipino worker. Arena Grand Master (AGM) Rowelyn Joy Acedo was recently recognized as one of the Outstanding OFWs in Dubai for 2025 during the Philippine Independence Day celebration in the United Arab Emirates on June 12.
Acedo, known for her brilliance in chess, has long been a prominent figure in the Philippine chess community. A former chess scholar of De La Salle University, she has carved a name for herself by winning numerous local, national, and international tournaments throughout her career. Her sharp mind and strategic prowess have made her one of the top female chess players in the country.
Now based in the Middle East, Acedo continues to wave the Philippine flag high—both as a working professional and as a competitive chess player. Her recent recognition as an Outstanding OFW is a testament to her dedication, excellence, and the positive impact she continues to make beyond borders.
The award highlights not only her achievements in the world of sports but also her contribution to the Filipino community abroad, embodying the resilience, intelligence, and global competitiveness of Filipinos.
As the nation celebrates her recognition, Rowelyn Joy Acedo stands as a role model for aspiring athletes and overseas workers alike—proving that with discipline, talent, and determination, excellence can be achieved wherever in the world one may be.(Bob Braceros)
