Chasing a Family Dream: Chino Sy-Tancontian’s Olympic Journey Begins

Chino Sy-Tancontian, one of only nine Filipino athletes awarded the prestigious Olympic Solidarity Scholarship for the 2028 Los Angeles Games, is determined to turn this rare opportunity into a lifelong dream come true—not just for himself, but for his entire family.

For the 24-year-old judoka from Davao City, the scholarship is more than a ticket to the Olympics. It’s the continuation of a dream that began long before he ever stepped onto the mat.

With renewed motivation and a sense of honor, Chino is training harder than ever, fully aware of the weight this opportunity carries.

Hailing from Davao City, Sy-Tancontian is a powerful reminder that world-class athletes can come from the provinces. He’s a three-time UAAP judo championrepresenting the University of Santo Tomas, a SEA Games gold medalist in sambo (2019), and a 2024 World Jiu-Jitsu Champion under the SJJIF.

Yet despite these accolades, he remains humble and focused on inspiring others—especially young athletes from rural areas.

As he begins this new chapter in his athletic journey, Chino Sy-Tancontian stands not just as a contender for Olympic glory, but as a symbol of perseverance, family legacy, and the power of never giving up on a dream.(Bob Braceros)
