MLANG, NORTH COTABATO — A rising tennis star from this quiet town is making waves on the international stage as she becomes part of the Philippine national team competing in the Billie Jean King Cup Asia/Oceania Group II set to take place in Malaysia on April 16.
The young athlete joins an elite lineup that includes US NCAA Division II players Shaira Hope Rivera and Alexa Milliam, along with fellow juniors Stefi Aludo and Tennis Madis from Mindanao. The squad is poised to face off against formidable opponents from Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Indonesia, Northern Mariana Islands, Uzbekistan, and host country Malaysia.
The national women’s team will be mentored by former national players Denise Dy and Bobi Angelo, bringing with them years of experience and strategic expertise. Their goal: to secure a promotion to Group I, a major step toward putting Philippine women’s tennis on the global map.
The inclusion of the young Cotabateña player highlights the growing talent emerging from Mindanao, a region that continues to produce world-class athletes across various sports.
As she represents the Philippines in this prestigious tournament, her community back home beams with pride, rooting for her success as she carries both the Philippine flag and the hopes of young Mindanaoan athletes.(Bob Braceros)
