From Humble Beginnings to World-Class: Pilipinas Sambo’s Decade of Glory

Achieving greatness requires more than just talent—it takes relentless hard work, divine blessings, and strong support from government institutions. This has been the journey of Pilipinas Sambo Incorporated, a Davao City-based national sports association accredited by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), which after ten years has risen to become one of the best in the world, producing world-class sambo athletes and champions.

Founded and currently presided over by Paolo Tancontian, a former world-class judo practitioner from Davao, Pilipinas Sambo has come a long way since its humble beginnings. Sambo, a Russian martial art, was once relatively unknown in the Philippines, but through vision, discipline, and perseverance, it has now flourished into a powerhouse sport that continuously delivers medals in international tournaments.

The growth of the sport would not have been possible without the steadfast support of the PSC, the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), and Davaoeño Senator Bong Go, who have stood firmly behind the organization’s efforts. Their backing has helped provide resources, opportunities, and recognition that have elevated Filipino sambo athletes to the global stage.

With its world-class reputation, Pilipinas Sambo now stands as a reliable medal source for the Philippines in prestigious international competitions. At the helm of this success is Paolo Tancontian, alongside a dedicated team led by coach Ace Larida and world sambo champion Sydney Sy Tancontian. Together, they have nurtured a culture of excellence that continues to inspire young athletes across the country.

Looking ahead, the future shines even brighter. With a solid foundation, strong leadership, and unwavering government support, Pilipinas Sambo is set to reach even greater heights in the years to come. From an emerging sport to a global force, its journey is a testament to how vision, faith, and perseverance can turn dreams into history-making triumphs.(Bob Braceros)

Globe Expands Broadband Reach To Speed Up Digital Inclusion

Globe is reinforcing its commitment to digital inclusion by expanding access to its fiber broadband services, strategically utilizing previously built network capacity.  Through targeted investments and customer insighting, Globe is enabling more Filipino households and small businesses to participate meaningfully in the country’s digital future.

“Fixed broadband continues to be a growth engine for the business.  We see user data consumption now surging past 30 GB/month per user.  We are fine tuning our fiber strategy to more than connectivity, it’s about empowering households, enabling SMEs, and growing the digital economy,” said Globe President and CEO Carl Cruz.

According to the Digital 2025 Report, Filipinos spend almost nine hours online daily.   This shows digital services are now integral to everyday life, making high-quality broadband more crucial than ever. Despite this, fixed broadband access is still inconsistent, with only 33% of households connected as of 2024, based on the latest figures from the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT).

Globe’s expanding GFiber portfolio anchored on postpaid plans and the contract-free, reloadable GFiber Prepaid are responding to the increased demand. As of the first quarter of 2025, Globe has 1.83 million broadband subscribers, with GFiber Prepaid alone growing 53% quarter-on-quarter to serve 400,000 Filipino homes.

“We’re building more than infrastructure, we’re enabling opportunity,” Cruz emphasized. “By expanding access to reliable broadband, we’re opening doors for millions of Filipinos to participate meaningfully in the digital economy.”

Focused Expansion

Globe’s network strategy is aligned with national digital goals, including the Department of Information and Communications Technology’s (DICT) National Broadband Plan and programs for Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs). By focusing on high-need and high-impact areas, Globe is helping advance digital equity while supporting inclusive economic participation.

Through ongoing migration from legacy fixed wireless and wired to fiber in targeted regions, as well as participation in shared infrastructure initiatives, Globe is addressing coverage gaps while ensuring network scalability and operational efficiency.

Globe has successfully migrated over 600 towns in at least 70 provinces nationwide to full fiber connectivity, increasingly eliminating copper from its network. This transition provides faster, more reliable internet for residents and supports Globe's sustainability agenda of reducing environmental impact and discouraging illegal salvaging.

“Modernization is one of Globe’s key success factors. When we made the leap from 2G to 4G, it unlocked massive gains. Now, we’re continuing that momentum not just for speed, but for service equity and sustainability,” Cruz said.

Investing in Long-Term Growth

Globe has invested ₱228 billion in capital expenditure and ₱236 billion in operational expenses over the last three years to modernize its network. These investments are not just about infrastructure, they are about economic empowerment, digital resilience, and long-term national competitiveness.

“We are not just building faster networks, we’re building a more connected society,” Cruz said. “Fiber broadband is the backbone of digital life. And as the digital economy continues to grow, Globe is committed to expanding our reach strategically, sustainably, and always with the customer at the heart of it.”

90% of Barangay Communal Now Covered by CCTV, Says Councilor Galvez

DAVAO CITY — Peace and order efforts in Barangay Communal, Buhangin have taken a major step forward, with 90% of the area now under surveillance through closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras. This was revealed by First Councilor and former Barangay Captain Mark Galvez, who emphasized the importance of technology in ensuring the safety of his constituents.

“This level of CCTV coverage allows us to monitor almost all parts of the barangay in real time,” Galvez said. “It helps us deter crime, respond to incidents faster, and gather vital evidence when needed.”

The CCTV network is part of Galvez’s broader initiative to strengthen peace and order in Barangay Communal. He explained that surveillance is only one part of a multi-layered approach, which includes deploying more security personnel and increasing visibility in key areas.

Currently, the barangay has a 100-strong force of barangay police officers who operate on 24/7 rotating shifts. “These personnel, combined with our surveillance system, ensure that we can act swiftly and efficiently when incidents occur,” Galvez noted.

To further support these efforts, the barangay recently acquired a brand-new Toyota Hilux, which will be used for mobile patrols and quick emergency response. “With this vehicle, we can move our team more effectively, especially during urgent situations,” he said.

Galvez also revealed future plans to expand the CCTV coverage to reach 100%, ensuring that no area in the barangay is left unmonitored. He stressed that investing in security infrastructure is crucial not just for crime prevention but also for building trust among residents.

“Security is the foundation of a progressive community,” Galvez stated. “When people feel safe, they are more likely to be productive, cooperative, and engaged in community-building.”

As Barangay Communal continues to modernize its security systems, residents are expressing greater confidence in local governance and a renewed sense of peace in their neighborhoods.(Bob Braceros)
