HCDC Women’s Volleyball Team Reigns Supreme at Araw ng Libertad Tournament

 

The Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) women’s volleyball team once again proved they are among the elite collegiate squads in Mindanao after securing the championship title in the 62nd Araw ng Libertad Collegiate Volleyball League held in Libertad, Misamis Oriental.

Displaying dominance, teamwork, and grit throughout the tournament, the HCDC spikers capped off their campaign with an impressive victory over Cagayan de Oro’s powerhouse, Kong Hua School—one of the most formidable teams in Northern Mindanao.

The victory solidifies HCDC’s reputation as a volleyball force to be reckoned with, following a string of strong finishes in recent regional competitions. Their championship win in Libertad is another testament to the hard work and dedication the players and coaching staff have put in.

At the helm of the team is Coach Roman Jacob Cousin, whose leadership and volleyball acumen have helped mold HCDC into a well-rounded and disciplined squad. Coach Cousin is also known as the heir of Davao City’s iconic Papa’s Pizza, a name synonymous with quality and tradition—traits that mirror his coaching philosophy.

DAVAO CITY — The city beams with pride as one of its finest athletes, Leo Aringo, takes a major leap in his volleyball career, signing a professional contract to play in Japan’s prestigious V.League.

Fresh off securing his third UAAP championship and being named Finals Most Valuable Player, Aringo, the former team captain of the National University Bulldogs, has officially joined the Saitama Azalea for the 2025-26 season. Known for his powerful spikes and dependable defense, the 6’2” open spiker is expected to be a key addition to the Japanese squad.

A homegrown talent from Dona Vicenta, Davao City, Aringo honed his skills early on as a varsity player at Davao City National High School. His breakout performance came during the 2019 Palarong Pambansa, where he led the city to a bronze medal finish in men’s volleyball.

Davaoeno spiker Faith Nisperos, a standout player for Alas Pilipinas and current Akari Charger, is set to graduate from Ateneo de Manila University. As she looks back on her remarkable journey, Nisperos shares her experiences and the valuable life lessons she learned while donning the blue and white jersey of the Lady Eagles.

A Memorable Stint with Ateneo

Nisperos' journey began as a volleyball varsity player at Ateneo de Davao University, where her talent and passion for the sport first shone brightly. Transitioning to Ateneo de Manila University, she quickly established herself as a key player for the Lady Eagles. Her tenure at Ateneo was filled with significant moments, from thrilling victories to personal growth both on and off the court.

Learning Life Lessons

Faith reflects on the numerous life lessons she absorbed during her time at Ateneo. Davaoena Spiker is part of the historic PH team bronze for the AVC Challenger Cup

DAVAO CITY—Davaoena spiker Faith Nisperos is part of the  Alas Pilipinas Women’s National Volleyball Team that won a historic bronze medal at the 2024  Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Challenger Cup hosted by the Philippines.

Nisperos was a high school varsity student at Ateneo de Davao University before she decided to play in Metro Manila.

The towering Davaoeno middle blocker played sparingly in the historic win of Alas Pilipinas.

The team’s win marked the first time in 63 years that a Philippine team has reached the podium in the prestigious event.

Despite a tough loss to Kazakhstan on Tuesday for a chance to win the gold, the team bounced back with remarkable determination to dominate the Australian team in the bronze medal match.

The nationals secured the bronze with set scores of 25-23, 25-15, and 25-7. This victory was especially significant as it mirrored their earlier triumph over the same team at the start of the campaign. (Romeo Braceros Jr.)

After 10 years, HCDC Lady Crusaders reclaim DACS volleyball crown

DAVAO CITY---After 10 years of waiting the Holy Cross of Davao College Crusaders finally reclaimed the women's collegiate volleyball crown in the Davao Association of Catholic Schools finals against Cor Jesu College at UIC Bajada Gymnasium last March 7, 2024.

The Crusaders coached by veteran and former Ateneo de Davao University varsity player Roman Jacob Cuison edged the visiting Cor Jesu College from Digos City, Davao del Sur in a thrilling five-set match-up.

In a Facebook post, Cuison is very happy and grateful for their big win.
