HCDC Crusaders Won 80th Araw ng Dabaw Basketball Tourney

The Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) Crusaders overcame tough challenge from the Agro Industrial Foundation College of the Philippines (AIFCP) Sailors in the finals to bring home the 80th Araw ng Dabaw Sports Festival Inter-Collegiate Basketball Tournament title at the Almendras Gym
Davao City Recreation Center.

The Crusaders leaned on the 13 points of most valuable player winner James Clarin Linares to beat the Sailors 81-76 in their championship game. Crusaders team captain Joshua Aguilon and players  Jhayston Oquias, Mark Fransisco and Harry Dumagan also played superb in the championship game.
The rest of the Crusaders team are Patrick Quidato, Bernard Gutierrez, Michael Gonzaga, Ken Gudes, Jim Yap, Renzo Galdo, and Andy Llemit.

Crusaders coach Isaias Gravador was very happy with their win because they really worked hard to win the crown. Meanwhile, the Jose Maria College Kings won third place after they bring down St. John Paul College of Davao, 72-65. The tournament is  presented by the Sports Development Division-City Mayor's Office and officiated by the
Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas.

TP Gets Playoff Spot In BPO Basketfest

The Teleperformance (TP) has assured itself a slot in the playoffs in the ongoing Davao Inter-business processing outsourcing (BPO) Basketball League (DIBL).

TP got the slot in the playoffs which starts on June 25 after they extended their winning streak to four games.
The defending champion in the tournament beat Conectys, 61-36, Sunday at the MontaƱa Recreation and Fitness Center, Incorporated along Dacudao Avenue in Agdao, Davao City.

TP spitfire guard Lou Gracilla scored 13 points to lead his team to victory in the tournament sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas. In the other games, Focusinc beat past Ibex, 50-47.
VXI SM for its part beat Next BPO, 67-42. The VXI Robinsons also routed Demand Science, 78-55.

Galacio Wins Bowlfest At NCCC

Davao City based bowler William Galacio has reached the monthly finals after he ruled the Datba Weekly Qualifying Bowling Tournament Saturday evening at the NCCC Mall Davao B3 Center Lanes.

After four games, Galacio scored 830 pinfalls to win the bowlfest organized by the Davao Tenpin Bowling Association.With his win, Galacio recieved P800 cash prize.

The second place went to Ronald Martin who won P500 after scoring 793 pinfalls. The third place went to Ulene Rose Pondoc who got P300 after scoring 785 points.



HCDC To Face Agro In Araw ng Dabaw Basketball Tourney

The Holy Cross Davao College (HCDC) Crusaders is set to face the Agro Industrial Foundation College of the Philippines (AIFCP) Sailors in the finals of the 80th Araw ng Dabaw Sports Festival Inter-Collegiate Basketball Tournament at the Almendras Gym Davao Recreation Center.

The Crusaders got the chance to face the Sailors in the finals after they beat  the Jose Maria College (JMC) Kings, 92-86, via overtime in the semifinals held on the same venue on Saturday. Jhayston Oquias scored 26 points for the Crusaders in their come from behind win over the Kings.

Harry Dumagan also added in 16 points while team captain Joshua Aguilon scored nine points including his turn around fade away shot that tied the match at 77-all to force the overtime.
Meanwhile, Nicole Barera scored 25 points for the Kings who were leading in the first three quarters of the game in a losing cause.

Isaias Gravador is very pleasd with their win and he vowed that his team will do their best to beat the Sailors in the championship game.

42 Kids Participated In Southshield FC Summer Soccer Clinic


Forty two children successfully joined the 15-day session soccer clinic sponsored by Southshield Football Club.

The children who graduated in the summer football clinic facilitated by Southshield FC were given certficates in a simple graduation ceremony at the Southpoint Football field in Datu Loho, Barangay Maa, Davao City.

The children who paid P1,500 to ba part of the clinic were separated into two groups the beginners and advance groups. Those who belong to the beginners were taught the basics on the sport of football.

The ones in the advance group were taught more techniques in playing football. Southshield FC president Carlo Chiu thanked the parents for allowing their kids to participate in the summer clinic.

Ateneo Wins In Mindanao Peace Games (MPG) Mindanao Football Tournament

The Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU) of Zamboanga Peninsula beat Maguindanao United of Armm  3-2 in the ongoing Mindanao Peace Games (MPG) Mindanao Football Tournament at the Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU) Football Field in Matina, Davao City.

ADZU striker Johnred Yamongan scored two goals for his team in their win against Maguidanao whose lone goal was provided by Marvin Mendez. The tournament which aims to foster peace and unity in Mindanao is sponsored by One Meralco Foundation and Mizuno.

The tournamnet features six teams from different regions of Mindanao including ADZU, Iligan Medical Center College, Addu,  Father Saturnino Urios University, Surallah Football Club and Maguindanao United of Armm.

To bring more cheers to the participants, Mizuno will also be giving away spikes to the best striker, best midfielder, best defender, and best goalkeeper of the tournament.

Davao City's Children's Games 2017 3x3 Basketball Kicks Off

Davao City's grassroots program on 3x3 basketball is now in full swing.

This developed after 60 teams from 30 barangays in Davao City are competing in the ongoing Summer Children's Games 2017 3-on-3 basketball which officially started yesterday at the Rizal Park and Davao City Police Office covered court.

The 3x3 basketball which is sanctioned by the  Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas features children from 10 and 12 years old. The 60 teams will be bracketed into 15 groups in a single round robin elimination round.

Those who will successfully hurdle the elimination round will proceed to the quarterfinals, semifinals and eventually championship. The championship game of the tournament organized by the city government of Davao will happen on May 27.

AdDu Booters Won Initial Game In Mindanao Peace Games


The Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) booters has won its initial game in the ongoing  Mindanao Peace Games (MPG) at the AdDU field in Matina, Davao City.

The home team AdDy footballers beat the visiting Surallah Football Club (FC) 3-1 on Monday afternoon. The team coached by Ewee De Leon relied on the goals provided by Rafaele Angelo Pascual, Bryle Cuenca and Jasper Lim ot bring down Surallah.

The lone goal of Surallah in the game was provided by striker Ryan Gavino. In the other games, Father Saturnino Urios University beat Iligan Medical Center College (IMCC) of Northern Mindanao, 11-0, mainly on the seven  goals provided by Venz Alexis Morgadez.

The 9-A-Side tournament is organized Mindanao Football Invitational and sponsored by One Meralco Foundation and Mizuno.

Reden Celda Making Mati City Proud In PBA

Hard work finally paid off for fast-rising PBA player Reden Celda who happens to be a resident of Mati City, Dava Oriental.

Celda is starting to get attention in the PBA after he carried his team Mahindra to a morale-boosting 122-121 overtime win over Phoenix Fuel Masters on Sunday. With just seconds left in the game, Celda drove to the basket and scored on a floater that lifted his team to a much-needed victory. The young guard who played for National University in college had a solid scoring with 26 points in their game.

Getting the chance to play in the PBA is not easy for the Mati City native Celda. Celda has to play first in the PBA developmental league before he got the chance to be drafted in the PBA. The spitfire recalled that he almost quit playing basketball after he got little playing time while playing for NU.

But the support of his family and his strong desire to play in the PBA made him return to basketball and now he reaping the fruits of his labor.

UM Tagum Wins Men's Beach Volley Tilt In Mati City

The University of Mindanao Tagum campus has won the bragging rights on who is the better school in the Phippines in beach volleyball after they won the  Visit Davao Fun Sale (VDFS) National Beach Volleyball Tournament at the Menzi Beach Park and Camp Site in Mati City, Davao Oriental on Sunday.

The UM Tagum Spikers withstood the challenge from two University Athletic Association of the Philippines schools National University and Far Eastern University and other local schools to win the men's beach volleyball crown. UM Tagum spiker Johnrel Amora scored 15 points including three service aces while teammate Hachaliah Gilbuena unloaded 13 markers and two big blocks to beat Edmar Flores and Kim Lapiz-bannered Davao Optima, 21-13, 21-17 in the finals.

UM Tagum won P30,000 for their feat in the tournament sponsored by the Department of Tourism (DOT) in Davao Region and backed by Bonamine-Tempra, Cebu Pacific, BPI Cards, Air Asia and Tanduay. The third place went to the NU Bulldogs who beat compatriot FEU Tamaraws  21-18, 21-15.

In the women's side, the  Philippine National Police (PNP) Lady Patrollers emerged as champion after beating  Ace Volleyball Club, 21-17, 23-21. Volleybelles Lourdelyn Catubag and Karen Kaye Quilario scored 10 points each to carry their team to victory.

Handumon, Acedo Could Miss Batang Pinoy 2017 In Oroquieta City

Two of the Davaoeno cyclists who helped in the collection of six gold medals, five silvers and four bronzes in the Batang Pinoy

nationals in Tagum City last year could miss the Batang Pinoy 2017 National Championships on July 9 to 15 in Oroquieta City in Misamis Occidental. Richard Handumon, Jr. and Myra Acedo could miss this year's Batang Pinoy since the sports event is only for athletes 15 years old and below.

It was learned that Handumon is already 16 while Acedo was 15 when they competed in last year's Batang Pinoy. To compensate for the possible departure of the two bemedalled cyclists,  PhilCycling deputy secretary-general for Mindanao Salvador Paholio, Jr. is holding the Summerfest 2017 Criterium Cycling Race on May 28 at the Crocodile Park to serve as eliminations for the BatangPinoy qualifying leg.

In this year's Batang Pinoy competition the city is set to send 200 athletes in various sporting events.
Guesting before the weekly Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at The Annex of SM City Davao,City Mayor's Office (SDD-CMO)  officer-in-charge Mikey Aportadera they are now preparing the documents for the athletes selected to represent the city in the prestigious sports tournament.

IGACOS Swimmer Wins Swimming Tilt In Mabini

Seventeen year-old promising swimmer Jun Rodriguez ruled the recent 900 meters Kopiat Swim Challenge for the 9th Summer Beach Sports Festival at the Kopiat island Beach View Resort, Mabini, Compostela Valley province.

Rodriguez, a resident of  Babak, Island Garden City of Samal (IGACOS) won P4000 and a trophy after he finished the race at first place after clocking seven minutes and 22 seconds. The second place went to former champion Kyle Pajarito (7:23.41).

The third place went to John Martin Yarra from Davao City  7:24.39. Its a double celebration for Rodriguez since he also broke the swimming record last year. In the amateur category, John Wesley Cuevas of Tagum City emerged as champion with the clock of  7:51:25.

The second place went to both John Marion Albano and Jhon Whesley who have an identical time of 8:00:00. The Kopiat Swimming Challenge is one of the  "major highlight" of the sports festival of Compostela Valley province.

Veteran Davaoena Judo Player Wins Judo Tilt In Malaysia


A 36-year-old veteran woman judo player has brought honor to Davao City after winning a gold in the Beautiful Terengganu International Judo Competition held at Gong Badak Sports Complex in
Malaysia over the weekend.

Jenilou Mosqueda, a resident of Lanang, Davao City ruled the women's half middleweight (-63 kilograms) category in the prestigious international judo tournament. Moqueda, a veteran campaigner of several judo tournaments both local and abroad beat fellow Filipina  Lei Tolentino of the University of Sto. Tomas (UST) judo varsity team via Ippon by Newaza (grappling) in their championship match to win the gold medal.

Mosqueda reached the finals earlier after beating Nur Fatin Izzati Ahmad Rosca of Penang and Sitti Namah Abdul Manan of Terangganu in earlier bouts. The Davaoena is very happy and proud of her win. After her win, Mosqueda is set to compete in the Asian Indoor Martial Arts in Turkmenistan come September this year.

Being a veteran judo player Mosqueda is also currently helping the junior members of the national judo team for transition when she along with other veterans retire.

Davaoena Being Considered For PH Volleyball Team


A former star volleyball player of Davao Christian High School is one of the players being eyed to be part of the national volleyball team of the Philippines.

Maddie Madayag, who currently plays for Ateneo de Manila women's volleyball team in the UAAP  as a middle blocker is part of the national training pool for volleyball of the Philippines. Francis Vicente, the coach of the Philippine women's volleyball team selected Madayag to be part of the training pool due to her height and great volleyball talent.

If ever she gets picked Madayag is set to represent the Philippines in the forthcoming Southeast Asian Games in Malaysia later this year. In the just concluded UAAP volleyball finals between Ateneo and De La Salle University, Madayag played well for Ateneo in their championship defeat against DLSU.

Madayag provided defense and offense for Ateneo in their loss to the two-time UAAP women's volleyball champion DLSU. Aside from her volleyball skills, Madayag is also admired because of her pretty face.

Boy, 15 Busted For Killing Niece He Wanted To Rape

Authorities arrested a 15-year-old boy for killing his own 16-year-old niece when the latter resisted the sexual desires of the former in Barangay La Union, San Isidro, Davao Oriental.

The San Isidro Municipal Police arrested the suspect (name withheld being a minor) for killing Jennylyn Hongoy, a student early morning of May 16. In the initial police investigation, the suspect armed with a knife tried to rape the victim but the latter resisted his sexual advances.

The suspect got angry and proceeded to stab the victim many times leading to her immediate death.Alert policemen immediately arrested the suspect after the killing.

Minda Volleybelles Spices Up UAAP 79 Volleyball Tourney

Promising women volleyball players from Mindanao spices up the just concluded 79 season of the UAAP Women's Volleyball Competition.

Davao City's Maddie Madayag, a product of Davao Christian High School is now one of the top players of Ateneo Blue Eagles Women's volleyball team. The towering 6'0 middle blocker provided defense and offence for the Blue Eagles especially in its thrilling championship battle against arch-rival De La Salle Lady Spikers.

Aside from her volleyball skills, Madayag is also considered as one of the beautiful faces among the rising volleyball stars in the Philippines. May Luna, an open spiker from Tagum City is one of the top reserve players of De La Salle in its championship run.

Luna, a student of Tagum City National High School provides bench points for La Salle especially if its starters are not playing well. Tin Tiamzon, a promising open spiker from Koronadal, South Cotabato is part of the starting line-up for La Salle in season 79.

Tiamzon played solid in the championship run of her team by providing double digit scoring in the championship games. In game 2, Tiamzon scored 18 points and got the player of the game honor.

Southshield FC Wins Two Trophies In 3rd Black Knights Football Tournament For A Cause


The Southshield Football Club has continued its winning run after winning the national football tournament 13th Del Monte Cup in Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon last month.

Southshield FC won two trophies and medals in the 3rd Black Knights Tournament For  Cause Football tournament at Tionko field, Ecoland, Davao City over the weekend. The 10 and under team of Southshield grabbed the second place in their category after they fell short against Rover in the championship round.

The team coached by former University of Mindanao football player Roland Manabit are composed of Yuan Jacob Guingguing, Charles Kenn Chiu, Anthony Elorde, James Gamete, James Delino, Art Romeo  Eroy, Ruzchen Villarmia, Jian Goyonan, Zyk Lopez, Rythm Demecillo and Karlos Donado.

The 12 and under team of Southshield FC also took the third place in their division after they beat Nabunturan team A in the battle for third 2-1.

The team coached by former UM players AJ Adana and Armand Valencia are made up of Bob Benedict Braceros, Adrian Elarmo, EJ Cabiles, Gian Lacerna, Karl Sumampong, Ryan Dordas, Louiz Herrera, Carlos Angelo Lacerna,  Raymond Pahuyo, AJ Guingguing, and Devon Kierulf.

Carlo Chiu, the president of Southshild FC is very pleased with their win and he promised the team will train even harder to win more football tournaments this year.
