DAVAO CITY – International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior bantamweight champion and Panabo City native Jerwin Ancajas has formally started his training for his scheduled title defense in April against Mexican challenger Jonathan Javier Rodriguez.
Over the weekend, Ancajas started training with widely popular American boxing trainer Freddie Roach at the Wild Card gym.
According to reports, gym training is the first for Ancajas since being in the United States for the past five months.
Ancajas did not start his formal training until his bout with Rodriguez has been finalized either on April 17 or 24 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
In a recent talk with the media, Ancajas said that he is not taking Rodriguez lightly since the latter is a dangerous opponent who wants to get his world boxing belt.
“Itong laban na ito talagang pag-eensayuhan ko,” Ancajas said.
Rodriguez is a difficult opponent for Ancajas since the latter has an impressive record of 22 wins and one defeat.
Manny Pacquiao Promotions president Sean Gibbons, who handles the boxing career of the Filipino boxer said Anjas is supposed to fight Rodriguez in April of last year but the bout was canceled due to COVID-19.
The MP executive said if ever Ancajas will successfully beat Rodriguez he is set to face dangerous Japanese boxing champion Kazuto Ioka later this year.
The 29-year-old Anjacas last fought on December 7, 2019, where he scored a sixth-round knockout win over Puerto Rico’s Miguel Gonzalez in Puebla, Mexico.
Ancajas fought two times in 2019 but none last year. (Romeo Braceros Jr.)
