Davao City Boys Renew Rivalry In PBA Finals

Two proud sons of Davao, also former collegiate foes, renew their rivalry as Barangay Ginebra and Meralco face off in the PBA Governors’ Cup Finals.
Scottie Thompson and Baser Amer take on the playmaking duties for the Gin Kings and the Bolts, respectively, when both teams lock horns beginning with Game One on Friday night at the Quezon Convention Center in Lucena.
Amer, a Davao City native, has always had the number of Digos native Thompson in college whenever they met in the NCAA playoffs where Amer’s San Beda eliminated Thompson’s University of Perpetual Help in three straight Final Four meetings.
Thompson, however, finally tasted success against Amer in the pros after the Gin Kings beat the Bolts in the finals of last edition of the season-ending tournament.

DJA Will Use Speed And Shooting In 3x3 Basketball Finals In Manila

The Davao Jones Academy (DJA) Spunky will use their speed and shooting when they represent Davao City in the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas 3x3 National Finals Under 15 on October 27 in Manila.
DJA coach Rael Diaz said since his players  Askiah Jhon Echavia, Jaime Batoon, Clark Xavier Abracia and Nico Cabalhin are not that tall they will just use speed and shooting to bring down their opponents.
Guesting before the weekly Davao Sportswriters Association Forum held at the NCCC Mall Food Cove function hall, Diaz said it had been the dream of the school to represent the city in the national finals.
Diaz said the odds of winning might not be on their side but he is confident his team can pull a surprise in Manila.
DJA got the slot to the national finals after defeating Holy Child College Davao, Reds 12-8, in the recent city eliminations.
The team is expected to leave Davao City on October 26.

Dranhs Hopes For A Better Finish In 2017 3x3 Basketball Finals In Manila

The girl's 3x3 basketball team of  Daniel R. Aguinaldo National High School (Dranhs) has vowed to their best for a better finish in the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas 3x3 Under-15 National Finals set on October 26 in Manila.
The team who will represent region 11 in the national finals is confident they can surpass their sixth place finish in 2015.
The team made up of Aleah Kaye Clapano, Mecca Gumapac, Mary Grace Sarmiento and Rea Ong got the slot to finals after beating defending champion Assumption College
of Davao (ACD) 16-13 last month.
Dranhs coach Ronnie Berato said to have a good performance in the national finals they will treat their games as a championship game.
Berato said since winning the crown his team has been training hard to have a good showing in the national finals.
He said after their Manila stint his girls will also represent Unit 3 in the Davao City Athletic Association Meet 2017 next month.

PCCL Davao Elimination Kicks Off On October 22

Some of the top college basketball teams in region 11 are joining the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) Davao Region eliminations which starts on October 22 at the  Almendras Gym Davao City Recreation Center.
The winner in the Davao City elimination will represent the city in the Mindanao Finals set on November 23 to 26.
The tournament sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) will have three brackets for the participating schools in region 11.
The bracket A will be lead by Ateneo de Davao University (Addu) Blue Knights,STI College, and  Jose Maria College (JMC) Kings.
The bracket B will be composed of Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) Crusaders, University of Immaculate Concepcion (UIC), St. John Paul College of
Davao (SJPCD), Philippine Women's College (PWC) Patriots and Cor Jesu College (CJC) of Digos.
The bracket C are made up of Davao Merchant Marine Academy College of Southern Philippines (DMMACSP) Mariners, Rizal Memorial Colleges (RMC) Bulldogs,Agro-Industrial Foundation College of the Philippines (AIFCP) Sailors and Holy Cross College of Sasa (HCCS).
On the first day of the tournament Addu will face STI, followed by the HCDC-UIC faceo-ff and DMMACSP will face RMC in the main game.

Ex HCDC Player Among UAAP Basketball MVP contenders

He is not tall and most athletic among the UAAP basketball players but former Holy Cross of Davao College Crusaders forward Alvin Pasaol is one of the contenders for the most valuable player award in the top college basketball league in the Philippines.
Pasaol is currently ranked fifth among the MVP contenders in the 80th UAAP basketball season.
The burly scoring machine of the University of East has 61.00 SPs. The burly forward is second in the league in scoring with an average of 22.4 per contest to go along with 5.1 rebounds.
Pasaol recently hugged the sport headlines after he scored 49 points in his team's 100-106 defeat at the hands of De La Salle University last week.
The huge scoring of Pasaol is considered as the second highest score by a local in the colorful history of the UAAP.

Suspect In Robbery Shot Dead In Calinan

A 21-year-old man allegedly involved in a burglary and robbery incidents was shot dead by policemen in  Barangay Calinan Proper, Calinan, Davao City over the weekend.
The Calinan police identified the slain suspect as Clark Tambis Ortega who was shot by the police around 7:10 p.m. of October 7.
In the initial police investigation, the suspect who just allegedly burglarized a house along Magsaysay Street and robbed someone in Bagsak Davao Bukidnon Road, Calinan was cornered by the police.
Instead of surrendering the suspect fought the responding policemen leading to his death.

P150,000 At Stake In Panabo Tennis Tourney

The city of Panabo in Davao del Norte has gone all out as they host a big national tennis tournament from October 19-22.
The organizers of the   Mayor James Gamao National Invitational Tennis Championship 2017 has set aside P150,000 cash prizes to the winners of the tennis tournament featuring some of the top tennis players in the Philippines.
Guesting before the weekly  Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at NCCC Mall Davao Food Cove Thursday, tournament director Boy Diong said the tennis courts that will be used in the competition is the same like the ones used in Metro Manila.
Among the big-named tennis players who will join the tournament are  Patrick John Tierro and tournament defending champion Butuan City native Johnny
Arcilla along with Leander Lazaro, Mark Anthony Alcoseba of Davao City, John Mari Altiche, Noel Mariano Damian, Jr.,
Elbert Vicente Anasta and Fritz Chris Verdad.
Diong said the particants will be grouped into two brackers and will play a round robin format.
The top two players in each bracker will play in the semifinals and the winners will dispute the championship trophy and cash.
He said those who will join the tournament will not go empty handed win or lose.

VXI Remain Spotless After 5 Games In BPO volleyfest

After five games the VXI spikers remain unbeaten in the ongoing  Davao Inter-BPO League (DIBL) Volleyball Tournament held at the Davao Doctors College
(DDC) Gym.
The VXI spikers beat Iqor, 25-17, 25-17 to remain spotless in the volleyfest featuring some of the call center companies operating in Davao City.
Meanwhile, after five gfames the Convergys men's volleyball team finally barged into the win column.
Convergys beat Conectys, 25-16, 26-24 to improve its record to 1-4.
In the other games, Alorica walloped Sutherland, 25-12, 25-15.
Teleperformance beat Next BPO Solutions, 25-12, 25-16.
Sutherland demolished Ibex Global, 25-12, 15-15.

Top Football Teams Will Play In Davao City Footfest

Some of the top football teams in region 11 are expected to join a two-month football league which seeks to find Davao City's representative in national and international events.
So far 12 teams have already confirmed participation in the football tournament which will be played  Saturdays of October and November.
Guesting before the weekly Davao Sportswriters Association Forum at the NCCC Mall Davao Food Cove function hall Thursday, Hyenas FC coach Rex Rodriguez said the tournament will feature the 9-A-Side and 11-A-Side categories.
Rodriguez said so far the teams who confirmed participation in the tournament are Rovers Football Club (FC), Hyenas FC, Rizal Memorial Colleges United, Southshield FC, Black Rose FC, Mintal FC,
Metro Kidapawan FC, Anak Padada FC, Davao Strikers FC, Pinas Club and Ovu Manuvu FC.
He said interested teams can still join all they need to do is to pay P3,000 registration.
The tournament will be played at the Alveo Land football field.

Davaoeno Player Broke UAAP Scoring Record

It took 15 years and a Davaoeno to break the local scoring record in the premier college basketball league in the Philippines.
On Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum, University of the East (UE) forward Alvin Pasaol scored 49 points in his team's 100-106 defeat against the De La Salle University Archers in the ongoing UAAP basketball season.
The huge scoring of Pasaol, 22 surpassed the 43 points of former National University Bulldogs stalwart Jeff Napa way back in 2002.
Napa, now the coach of Letran College Knights in the NCAA has expressed joy for Pasaol for surpassing his UAAP record.
He said Pasaol's feat could have been sweeter if his team beat La Salle.
Pasaol, a former player of Holy Cross of Davao College Crusaders also made another UAAP history by scoring 21 points in the first two quarters of the game.
His coach, Derrick Pumaren, revealed that his top player had suffered a mild sprain. "He was pushing himself.
Masakit 'yung ankle niya, but he said that he's still going."
The usually laconic Pumaren could not help but gush at Pasaol's effort after the game, even if it came in a losing effort.
"Alvin was awesome tonight," said the veteran coach.
"I was telling him, five (less) pounds, he could have scored 60," Pumaren said, laughing. "But he really played well.
My hats off kay Alvin. First time ata that I've coached a local that scored 49, kasi dito import lang ang nakaka-score ng
ganyan."
"He really gave us a show tonight. I was really praying that he gets 50, but we'll take 49."
Pumaren considers Pasaol unique among players that he has coached in his long career – a list that includes Jun Limpot and
Allan Caidic.
"Si Alvin, akala mo hindi niya alam 'yung play, parang hindi nakikinig. Pero once you start the play, he knows it. And
then, he's a player na you will underestimate, dahil parang medyo malusog. Medyo maraming relaxed muscles," he explained,
while Pasaol could only laugh in agreement.
"Pero kaya niya," Pumaren said emphatically. "You can see, hindi naman siya ganoon kataas, but he's there always for the
rebound, he's quick on the ball, and he can score inside and outside."
