Davao City—A former track star from the University of Mindanao won a bronze medal in the tough Taiwan Open 2024 in Taiwan on June 1.
Sgt. Sonny Wagdos, an enlisted member of the Philippine Air Force finished in third place in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:51.
Wagdos won a silver medal in the 31st Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia last year.
He also won two medals in an international athletic meet in Taiwan in 2023.
Wagdos won gold in the 10,000-meter event and silver in the 5,000-meter competition.
Wagdos finished second in the 5,000-meter run for men in the Cambodia SEA Games.
In a Facebook post, Wagdos expressed elation for his win.
"Thank You for the Strength and Guidance, Lord God🙏😊," Wagdos said.
Wagdos, 25, a native of Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur, won a bronze medal in the 2019 and 2022 Southeast Asian Games hosted by the Philippines at the same event.
On April 28, 2022, Wagdos won the gold medal in the 2022 Philippine Athletics Championship at the Philsports Complex, Pasig City.
