Panaboan chess teen wizard gets bronze in Eastern Asia Juniors

 




FIDE Master (FM) Christian Gian Karlo Arca from Panabo City gave the first medal for Team Philippines at the Eastern Asia Juniors and Girls Chess Championships 2024 with a bronze in Open Rapid category during the first day of the competition at the Gunadarma University , Karawaci , Tangerang, Banten, Indonesia on Thursday, July 4.

The 15-year-old Almaty, Kazakhstan Asian Youth Blitz Chess U16 champion gifted himself and the country with a third-place finish after beating International Master (IM) Prin Laohawirapap of Thailand in the ninth and final round.

The incoming Grade 9 student of Dasmariñas Integrated High School finished in a tie for 3rd to 4th placers together with Prin by scoring seven points on account of 7 wins and 2 loses in nine rounds.

He beat IM Prin after the tie break points were applied.

FIDE Master (FM) Dinh Nho Kiet of Vietnam won the gold while FIDE Master (FM) Satria Duta Cahaya of Indonesia took the silver. The duo tallied 7.5 points each.

FM Arca defeated Arena FIDE Master (FM) Alessandro Alfaridzi Amir of Indonesia in the first round, however fell short to Rafa Firjatullah of Indonesia and Claudio Vargues Vasco Lasama of Indonesia in the second and third round, respectively.

FM Arca bounce back after beating Christopher Elvan Liaw of Indonesia (Round 4), Braveheart Honoris Christian Lumunon of Indonesia (Round 5), Uriel Noah Oloan Sidabutar of Indonesia (Round 6), FIDE Master (FM) Nayaka Budhidharma of Indonesia (Round 7), Munkhdalai Amilal of Mongolia (Round 8) and Prin (Round 9), in order.

FM Arca is eyeing his 3rd and final International Master (IM) norms at the Eastern Asia Juniors and Girls Chess Championships 2024 when the Standard competition gets underway on Friday.

FM Arca showed he’s the next big thing in Philippine chess as he topped a Grandmaster tournament in Quang Ninh in Ha Long Ward, Ha Long City, Vietnam last May.

The feat earned FM Arca the second of the three norms to become an International Master while earning a massive 62.8 FIDE rating points that should propel him straight to the breaching 2300-plateau.
