PBA drafting of Alvin Pasaol shows the strong sports program of Barangay Sasa

The selection of Alvin Pasaol in the PBA draft in 2021 has been a source of joy and inspiration to the athletes and residents of Barangay Sasa.

As a Barangay Sasa resident, many of his neighbors were very happy with his selection in the PBA.

The current local officials of Barangay Sasa are also pleased and proud of the achievement of Pasaol since his selection in the biggest professional basketball league in the Philippines is an indication that the sports program of Barangay Sasa is solid and effective.

What makes the selection of Pasaol in the PBA a source of inspiration is that he is getting playing minutes in the oldest professional basketball league in Asia, unlike other basketball stars who were selected in the PBA who come from the province and get little or no playing time.

Since the incumbent officials of Barangay Sasa assumed office in 2018, they have prioritized focusing on sports to promote a healthy lifestyle among their constituents.

The opening of the city-wide basketball and volleyball league organized by the PBA party list was also recently held in the Dona Pillar gymnasium in Barangay Sasa.

PBA party-list congresswoman Migs Nograles held the opening jn Barangay Sasa since she allocated five million of her congressional funds to renovate Dona Pillar gym.

The decision of the PBA party to do the opening in Sasa also indicates that the sports program of Barangay Sasa is working well.

The barangay officials have initiated the construction of various gyms in Barangay Sasa to be used in sports and social events.

They also offer prizes and support to various sports leagues in the different puroks in Barangay Sasa.

Last July 30 of this year, a team from Barangay Sasa won the championship in the women's division of the Second District Volleyball League.

The team represented by Dona Pillar beat other barangays from the second district to win the coveted trophy.

Congressman Pulong Duterte backs Jhun Duray as barangay captain of Barangay Catalunan Pequeno

If luck permits and Jhun Duray is elected as the next barangay captain of Catalunan Pequeno, it would be a huge blessing for the people of the said barangay.

This scenario developed since Duray has the full support of first district congressman Pulong Duterte in this year's Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections slated on October 30.

When Duray filed his certificate of candidacy as barangay captain of Catalunan Pequeno last September 1 at the Comelec office in Magsaysay Park, Davao City, some of the staff of Duterte were present to support him.

The son of Duterte, Omar, who is running as barangay captain of Buhangin, was also there to raise the hand of Duray.

Duray, a two-term Barangay councilor, had no intention of running as barangay captain since he still had one term left as a barangay legislator.

However, many people of Barangay Catalunan Pequeno personally urged him to and even told him that they would not support him if he just ran as a barangay councilor.

Aside from the strong clamor from the people, Duray also decided to run due to the "heavenly sign" he got from the late Barangay Catalunan Pequeno captain Albert Baguilod.

While at the grave of Baguilod, he asked for a sign from his idol if he would pursue his plan to run as barangay captain.

Baguilod answered his query by sending a mini tornado that destroyed a mini tent in the area.

The odds of running against an incumbent barangay captain might be challenging, but Duray is focussed on his aim to serve the people of Barangay Catalunan Pequeno in a higher capacity as barangay chairman.

Duray is confident the people and Baguilod from above will support him all the way in this year's Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections.

Former Barangay 25-C, Davao City barangay captain Charito Escasinas has officially joined the race as chairman in her barangay in the October 30 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections.

Accompanied by her lone candidate for barangay councilor of Barangay 25-C and some supporters, Escasinas officially filed her certificate of candidacy as barangay captain on the last day of BSKE COC filing at the Comelec office in Magsaysay Park last September 2.

Escasinas said she decided to join the race for barangay captain in one of the smallest barangays in the first district of Davao City, which has an estimated registered voters of 1,008, to bring back peace and order.

Escasinas, who is known for her tough stance against criminals during her years as barangay captain, told the Latest Davao News she decided to run again this year after reports that drugs and robberies are back, especially since former president and Davao City mayor Rodrigo Duterte is no longer in office.

"Peace and order dyud ang isa sa akong tutukan kung makabalik ko as barangay captain," Escasinas said.

Aside from peace and order, Escasinas said she would also bring back social services to her barangay and give them to the residents, not non-residents or just a select few.

"Ang mga tabang gikan gobyerno dapat mahatag dyud sa mga residente," Escasinas added.

Escasinas said while she was away from politics, many local residents of Barangay 25-C still regularly visited her house to seek help.

Barangay Dumoy is all about transparency in public funds and projects

While some barangays are not keen on showing how much they spend on projects for the residents, that is not the case for Barangay Dumoy.

Barangay Dumoy chairman Jessie Mar Culaste said transparency in public funds and projects is something he consistently adhered to since he became a barangay captain in 2002.

Once a resident enters the Dumoy Barangay Hall for assistance or query regarding barangay affairs, a barangay disclosure board can be visible on the side of the stairways leading to the second floor of the Dumoy Barangay Hall.

At the barangay disclosure board, the current annual budget, barangay expenditures, and other financial-related matters are posted for the public to know.

Culaste said the barangay disclosure board is part of the Department of Interior and Local Government mandate for barangays all over the Philippines to put a disclosure board for transparency.

"Aside sa DILL part sad ning barangay disclosure board sa order sa city kay naga aim man ang Davao City nga modaog sa most outstanding city in terms of housekeeping," Culaste told Latest Davao News.

He said as barangay captain, it is their duty to fully inform the public how much the barangay's funds are and where these funds go.

Last August 30,  Culaste formally filed his certificate of candidacy for his reelection bid in the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections scheduled on October 30.

Culaste's reelection bid is very strong this year since he is supported by 11 barangay councilor candidates, most of whom are incumbent officials of Barangay Dumoy.

In a talk with Latest Davao News, Culaste said if luck permits and he gets reelected as barangay captain, he will continue his health and social services program for Barangay Dumoy residents.

In this year's election, Culaste is confident of his chances since he has done many great things for Barangay Dumoy residents since he was elected barangay captain in 2002.

For his current term, which started in 2018, Culaste said they estimate that first congressman Pulong Duterte and other government agencies have already allocated P400 million funds to fund the various infrastructure projects in the 28 puroks in his barangay.

Culaste said among these projects are the construction of gyms, roads, and drainage projects.

He said some of the significant infrastructure projects in his barangay are the P60 million farm-to-market road sourced from the Department of Agriculture, the main road improvement of Dacoville at P85 million, and a P76 million drainage project.

The amiable barangay captain said under his administration, he made it a point to prioritize infrastructure developments since it is a huge help for his beloved constituents.

The professional dentist is very grateful to Congressman Duterte and his brother, Davao City Mayor Baste Duterte, for allocating many infrastructural projects in his barangay.

Culaste is hopeful more infrastructure projects will be poured into his barangay in the next few years.

Palit basura program a huge help for Barangay Sasa residents

One of the noble and helpful programs initiated by the current leadership of Barangay Sasa is the palit basura program, wherein residents have the chance to get kilos of rice in exchange for their recycled garbage, such as plastics and bottles, among others.

The incumbent officials of Barangay Sasa decided to implement the program to help residents get some rice for free and throw their garbage properly instead of throwing it into the sea, especially since some puroks in Barangay Sasa are located on the coastline.

For this, the Palit basura project Barangay Sasa allocated residents 20 sacks of rice monthly in exchange for recycled materials.

Since the program has started, it already helped some 1,000 families in the barangay.

The program offers two benefits: the social benefit for the residents and the environment since the garbage will be appropriately thrown away instead of ending up in the seas.

The Noble program is something other barangays in Davao City can replicate since it is a massive help to both residents and the environment.
