Veteran Davaeono chesser targets crown for PH in Asian Seniors Online Chess Championship



DAVAO CITY---A veteran Davaoeno chesser based here is one of the members of the Philippine chess team that will compete in the Asian Seniors Online Chess Championship on July 13 to 21.
National Master Alex Lupian will join forces with grandmaster Joey Antonio, International Masters Ricky de Guzman, Angelo Young, Petronio Roca and Asian Seniors champion Chito Garma, National Master Rudy Ibanez.
The Philippine chess team headed by Antonio is one of the favorites in the tournament since the latter placed second to Peruvian GM Julio Granda Zuniga in the World Seniors Championship three years ago in Acqui Terme, Italy.
Some of the top chess teams in Asia are set to join the nine-day tournament.
Among the top chessers in the competition are  GMs Niaz Murshed of Bangladesh,
Saidali Iuldachev, Tahir Vahidov and Alexei Barsov of Uzbekistan and IM Jamsed Isaev of Tajikistan.
The online chess tournament offers two categories the 50-and-above and 65-and-above and begins with a seven-round Zonal qualifier with the best performers advancing to the nine-round Finals, all using the Swiss System format.
The Philippines is bracketed in Zone 3.3 that includes countries like Brunei, Cambodia, Chinese Taipei, East Timor, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Laos, Macau, Mongolia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
The competition offers  a total of $3,000 will be up for grabs including $500, $350 and $300 to the champion of the 50-and-above and 65-and-above and the best woman player.(Romeo Braceros Jr.)
