Kapalong Runner Runs Barefoot In BP Games

A 13-year-old girl runner from Kapalong, Davao del Norte has captured the heart of netizens including sports celebrities because she prefer to run barefoot in her running events.

Princess Dian Penaranda captured th attention of many after she was seen competing barefoot in the 100 meter dash under the scorching heat of the sun at the oval of the Sports and Tourism Complex in Tagum City, Davao del Norte. Asked by reporters why she will compete barefoot, Penaranda said she just prefer to run that way because she is comfortable with it.

The photo of Penaranda in barefoot while waiting for the start of her running event elicited many responses from netizens including Kiefer Ravena who offered to send her shoes. PBA player Rob Reyes and former Gilas skipper Jimmy Alapag also retweeted the photo, with Alapag adding a caption: "No athlete in our country should have to compete like this."

The young athlete however said she run barefoot not because her parents could not afford to buy her shoes but simply because she feels comfortable running without shoes. "Di po ako nagsusuot ng sapatos kahit sa ibang competitions (di naman nahihirapan)," Penaranda said. Sadly finished dead last in her heat which disqualifies her from competing in the next round of competition.
