Young Chess Star Wesley Jovan Magbanua Wins Daliao Toril Chessfest

Promising chesser Wesley Jovan Magbanua,  Philgymn Villajuan, Jun Batucan and Jay Bulicatin were the big winners in the 5th Daliao SK Chess Tournament held
Barangay Daliao Covered Court in Toril, Davao City over the weekend.
Magbanua, 12-year-old chess scholar of Jose Maria College (JMC) successfully defended his title in the 12 and under category after scoring 5.5 points in the six-round Swiss System Format.
With his win, Magbanua won P3,000 and a medal.
Villajuan for her part won the 16-under crown after scoring a perfect six points in the chessfest.
With her win Villajuan won P5,000 and a medal.
Batucan for his part won the seniors title after scoring five points.
Batucan won P3,000 and a medal as prizes.
Meanwhile,  Bulicatin  won the 30-below title over Jimzon Trangia (5.0), Jon Christian Lesaca (4.5), Marcelo Lagura (4.5) and Meguel Jorgio (4.5) who
grabbed the next four spots.
With his win Bulicatin won P8,000 and a medal.

Usman Wins Datba Bowling Tourney At NCCC Bowling Lanes

Davao City based bowler Danny Usman is now richer by P800 after winning the Davao Tenpin Bowlers Association weekly qualifying bowling tournament held at
the NCCC Mall B3 Center Lanes Tuesday evening.
After four games, Usman scored 822 pinfalls to win the bowlfest organized by Datba.
Aside from the cash and trophy, Usman also got a slot in the monthly finals with his win.
The second place went to Atty. Art Gamolo who won P400 after scoring 778 pinfalls.
The third place went to Yule Tanlimco who won P300 after scoring 777 pinfalls.

Southshield FC Wins DD'S Christmas Football Festival

The Southshield Football Club is ending the year with a bang.
The 10 and under team A of Southshield FC won their division in the recent DD'S Christmas Football Festival at the Tiongko football field along Quimpo Boulevard, Davao City.
The team coached by former University of Mindanao football player Roland Manabit beat Medvil Football Club in the finals 2-0 to win the crown and medals in the footballfest.
Southshield FC strikers Enzo Trinidad and Art Eroy provided the winning goals for the team in the championship game.
The win is sweet for Southshield FC since Medvil earlier beat them in the elimination round.
The team also played inspired since four of their star players will be moving up in the 12 and under team next year.
The players who will play in the higher division next year are Charles Chiu, Niel Imperial, Zyk Lopez and James Gamite.
The players also wanted to make their 10 and under coach happy before they moved up in the higher division next year.
Dr. Coco Trinidad, the father of Enzo Trinidad is very proud and happy for his son for providing one of the two winning goals for the team.
The other members of the champion team are the following: Yuan Guingguing, Anthony Elorde, Jian Goyonan and Karlos Donado.
The year 2017 is a great year for Southshield FC as the team won various football tournaments in various parts of Mindanao.

Bernardo Carpio National High School Wins GET Cup Basketball Tourney

The Bernardo Carpio National High School (BCNHS) is feeling good these days.
This developed after BCNHS upset the defending champion Davao City National High School (DCNHS) to win the 2017 2nd Guillermo E. Torres (GET) Inter-Public High School basketball tournament.
Behind the exploits of tournament most valuable player James Belulo BCNHS beat DCNHS 95-85 in the finals to win the crown and the bragging rights as the best public high schools basketball team in Davao City.
Belulo scored 26 points in the finals.
Belulo's teammates Jonathan Bajao, Remelio Harina and Peter Pansit also played well in the championship game.
The three players mentioned above scored a total of 47 points for their team in their win against the tough DCNHS team.
The other members of the champion team are the following: Justin Batilo, Jezreel Iman, Judirick Belingan, Benjamin Camandia, Vincent Pantonial, Andrei Ngoho, Billy Ebrero and Francis Ningwa.
Meanwhile, Keith Realino and Daniel Josh Villanueva scored 18 and 15 points respectively for DCNHS in a losing cause.
The third place went to Duterte National High School who beat Tugbok National High School in their battle for third match-up.

Ford Academy Of Arts Wins Nabunturan Basketball Tourney

The Ford Academy of Arts (FAA) high school basketball team is ending 2017 with a bang.
FAA throught the strong scoring effort of Most Valuable Player of the tournament Jude Paolo Bagay dethrone the defending champions from St. Mary’s College (SMC) 84-78 in the Third LGU Cup-Simballay Festival 2017 in
Nabunturan, Compostela Valley.
Bagay and the rest of his team played strong defense and offence to bring down the defending champion from Tagum City.
FAA coach Moses Mabayao said SMC played well but the compusure and experience of his players prevailed in the end in their win.
With their latest win, Mabayao is confident FAA is on the right track for more victories in 2018.


Daliao Chessfest Kicks Off On December 17

Some of the promising chess players in Davao City are expected to join the 5th SK Daliao Youth Chess Tournament which opens on December 17 at the Barangay Daliao Covered Court in Toril, Davao City.
Guesting before the weekly Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum held at the NCCC Mall Davao B3 Center Family Room on Thursday, National Arbiter (NA) Ely Acas said the chessfest is sponsored by brangay councilor Joseph Dumogho so that woodpushers in their barangay will have a tournament to hone further their skills.
Acas said the chessfest is sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP).
He said 100 players already registered to join the six-round Swiss System format competition.
The categories in the chessfest are the following: 30 years old and below, 16 years old and below and 12 years old and below
Some the promising players who will compete in the chessfest are  last year’s 12-below champion Wesley Jovan Magbanua of the Jose Maria College and 16-below champion Eric Yngayo who are both aiming to defend their titles successfully.
Those who can register early can also get free shirts, snacks and lunch.
Big cash prizes will be given to the winners of each of the categories.
The top top three winners of the 30 years old and below category will receive P8,000, P4,000 and P2,000 with medals.
The fourth to 10th placers will not go home empty-handed as they will also take home consolation prizes of P500 each with medals. The best female will also receive P1,000 and a medal. The 16-below champion, however, will take home P5,000 while the next two winners will grab P2,500 and P1,000 with medals.
The fourth to 10th placers will also receive P300 each and medals. In the 12 years old and below category, the top three winners will receive P3,000, P1,500 and P800 with medals while the fourth to 10th placers will be given P200 each.

John Marvin Miciano Earns FIDE Master After Good Finish In Malaysian Chessfest

Davaoeno national master (NM) John Marvin Miciano is feeling good these days.
This developed after the 17-year-old Far Eastern University (FEU) senior high school student earned his  Fide master (FM) title after an
impressive finish in the recently-concluded 2017 Penang Heritage City International Chess Open 2017 in Malaysia.
In the said tournament, Miciano finished  17th out of 134 participants from 16 countries that attracted seven grand masters, 17 international masters and
11 Fide masters.
Miciano scored six points after nine rounds in the chessfest.
Despite being seeded 37th in the tournament, Miciano scored stunning upsets over
Filipino IMs Haridas Pascua, sixth seed, and Emmanuel Senador, 21st seed, in second and seventh rounds, respectively.
Miciano also outclassed FMs DeniSonjayandSetyakiAzarya Jodi of Indonesia and NhavinKumaresan of Malaysia.
He drew with India's JaykumarSheteSammed and Indonesian FM YosephTheolifusTaher.
The current rating of Miciano is  2327, improving his previous rating of 2224.
The international chess sting of Miciano was supported by National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) president Cong. Prospero Pichay, Jr. and
Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman William "Butch" Ramirez and Far Eastern University.
With his impressive showing in Malaysia, Miciano is set to compete  in the Johor Open International in Malaysia until December 19 in a bid to earn his second IM norm.

Tongo wins Datba Bowling Tourney At NCCC Bowling Lanes

Davao City based bowler and lawyer Rodrigo Tongo continues to make waves in the local bowling scene.
Tongo won P1,000 after ruling the Davao Tenpin Bowlers Association Weekly Qualifying Bowling Tournament title at the
NCCC Mall B3 Center Lanes Tuesday evening.
After four games, Tongo scored 906 pinfalls to win the crown.
The second place went to Romeo Serrano who pocketed P500 after scoring 846 pinfalls.
The third place went to another lawyer Art Gamolo who won P400 after scoring 827 pinfalls.

Running Siblings Wins Araw ng Barangay Langub 5K Fun Run


Two siblings who will represent Davao City in the forthcoming Davao Regional Athletic Association (Davraa) are making a huge headway in their preparation for the biggest sporting event in this part of Mindanao.
This developed after the Luardo siblings, Carlo and Princess Niña, ruled the just concluded Araw ng Barangay Langub 5K Fun Run held at the Langub Elementary School.
Carlo, a 15-year-old student of Maa Elementary School, won the male category with a  run of 14 minutes and 54 seconds
Eustaquio Savellano, the coach of  the Luardo sibling said his record is  57 seconds faster than his 41st National Milo Marathon mark and just 56 seconds short of the 13:58 Philippine record.
The younger sister of Carlo, Niña, a 12-year-old Langub Elementary School athlete ruled the female group after checking in at 23:37.
With the strong performance of his ward, Sabellano is confident the two will do well in DAVRAA slated in February 2018.

Davao Off-Roader Wins Tough Track Challenge 2017 In Barangay Maa

An off-roader from Davao City emerged champion  in the Tough Track Challenge 2017 that closed Sunday evening at the Iluminado Quinto Offroad Race Track in Barangay Langub, Diversion Road, Maa, Davao City.
Michael Cerin  of 4Wheelers Davao emerged extreme class champion for the third time in his colorful off-roading career.
Cerin previously won the crown after topping the 2006 and 2011 editions in Manila and Clark, Pampanga, respectively.
The 40-year-old Cerin won the championship after his overall time of  33 minutes and 8.50 seconds.
The second place went to Jun Abrena of Lake Panimaloy Off-Roaders Club one hour, three minutes and 28.32 seconds.
The third place went to  Lorenzo "Jiggy" Rodriguez, also of 4Wheelers Davao, 1:04:07.95.
The top 10 in the off-road event are the following:  4Wheelers Davao racers Reynan Jayme and Cesar Daquil, female entry Maila Alivia of
Isabela Extreme, Christian Doyon of Ormoc 4Wheelers, Junar Nolasco of Cabantian Adventure Team, Art Benedict Ong of  Ormoc 4Wheelers and Dennis Garcia of 4Wheelers Davao.

BPI Bank Manager Wins Bowlfest At NCCC Bowling Lanes

A bank manager has won the Davao Tenpin Bowlers Association Weekly Qualifying Bowling Tournament at the NCCC Mall B3 Center Lanes
over the weekend.
After four games, William Galacio, branch manager of Bank of the Philippine Island (BPI) scored 829 pinfalls to win the crown.
With his win, Galacio won P1,000 from Datba who organiZed the bowlfest.
The second place went to Oslec Garcia who won P600 after scoring 803 pinfalls.
The third place went to monthly finals qualifier Danny Usman who won P400 after scoring 802 pinfalls.

Swimming Davaeono Sisters Targets Palarong Pambansa Stint

Two promising swimming sisters are hoping to quality for the Palarong Pambansa 2018 slated in Vigan City.
Multi-medalists swimmers Lora and Liaa Amoguis are training hard to win in the Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) Meet set in
February next year so that they can quality for the Palarong Pambansa.
Guesting before the weekly, Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at NCCC Mall Davao B3 Center Family Room, the Amoguis sisters said their immidiate dream is to make it to the Palaro and if they make it they also aspire to make to the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.
The two have a bright future in Philippine swimming.
Lora, an 11-year-old Grade 6 student of Abba's Orchard School, clinched six golds in the elementary girls 100m backstroke,
100m butterfly, 200m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 200m IM and 200m relay events.
Her sister Liaa, 10, who also studies in the same school, got two golds in the 100m freestyle and relay but trailed her
older sister in the 100m butterfly, 200m IM, relay and 200m freestyle to settle for silver.

Davao Cop Wins Gold Medal In World Police Games In US

A 65-year-old retired policeman from Davao City brought honors to the city by a winning a gold medal in  the men's 60-above tennis event of the World Police Games last August 16 in Los Angeles, California.
Bob Sabandon beat tennis players from San Francisco, Italy, San Diego and Russi in the finals to win the gold medal for the Philippines and Davao City as well.
Guesting before the weekly Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum held at the NCCC Mall B3 Family Room, sabandon said the global sports event was participated in by 65 countries.
Sabandon said his win is very memorable since the first time joined in the same tournament he did not even get a medal.
He revealed that he started tennis at 14 years old and continued to play with tennis after 30 years and nine months of service with the Philippine National Police.
With his latest accomplishment, Sabandon hoped the Philippine Sports Commission and other sports bodies including
private sectors will help him so that he can compete in Japan for the International Tennis Federation Open next year.


Danny Usman Wins Datba Weekly Qualifying Bowling Tournament At NCCC B3 Bowling Lanes

Davao City based bowler Danny Usman won P800 after winning the  Davao Tenpin Bowlers Association (Datba) Weekly Qualifying Bowling Tournament held at NCCC Mall B3
Center Lanes Tuesday evening.
After four games, Usman scored 787 pinfalls to win the bowlfest organized by Datba.
Usman is on a roll since this is his second win in December.
The second place went to Jess Rule who scored 777 pinfalls.
The third place went to Manny Nierra who scored 773 pinfalls.

Davaoeno Alvin Pasaol Applies For 2017 PBA D-League Rookie Draft

AFTER making waves in the recently-concluded UAAP men's basketball season, former Holy Cross of Davao College Crusader player Alvin Pasaol is ready to take his game to the next level.
The University of the East star is among the 201 applicants for the 2017 PBA D-League Rookie Draft which unfolds on December 12 at the PBA Cafe.
One of the top scorers in the collegiate leagues, the 6-3 Pasaol is best remembered for dropping 49 points in a 73-97 loss to Ateneo at the Mall of Asia Arena.
After the UE Red Warriors finished the season one rung above last place, Pasaol now hopes to bring that offensive repertoire to the semi-pro ranks in the hope of making it to the PBA someday.
Also headlining this batch of rookie hopefuls are Far Eastern University gunner Arvin Tolentino as well as Tamaraws teammates Hubert Cani, Richard Escoto, Joe Trinidad and Wendell Comboy.
Promising big men in Abu Tratter of UAAP runner-up La Salle, Jeo Ambohot (Letran), Christian Buñag (Mapua), Sean Manganti (Adamson), Javi Gomez di Liaño (UP), and Jayson David (San Sebastian) also declared for the draft.
The new D-League season opens on January 18.

Minda Off-Roaders Will Compete In Davao City Track Challenge On December 9-10

An estimated 40 off-roaders all over Mindanao are expected to join the  Tough Track Challenge 2017 on December 9 and 10 at the
Iluminado Quinto Offroad Race Track in Barangay Langub, Diversion Road in Davao City.
The off-road event is  organized by 4
Wheelers Davao Association, Incorporated and presented by 119 Offroad House by NASFOR President Ramon Toong.
This early, the confirmed participants are Isabela Extreme Offroaders, Maxi Atlitica, Ormoc 4wheeler, Dipolog Unlimited
Offroad, Waig Adventure Team, Davao Cabantian Adventure Team, 4Wheeler Davao, Lake Pinamaloy Offroaders, Digos 4wheelers
and Team AFPS Cagayan de Oro.
The first day of the off-road event is the elimination round while the championship commences on the second day.
The event offers car accessories, equipment and cash prizes to winners.
The track challenge is sponsored by Phoenix Petroleum Philippines, Maxis, Merco and Selecta.

Stella Maris Student Wins Gold In 18th Asean Age Group Open Chess Championships In Malaysia

A 13-year-old student of Stalle Maris Academy  of Davao (Smad) brought honors to Davao City by winning a gold, two silvers and a bronze in the recent 18th Asean Age Group Open Chess Championships 2017 at the Kuantan, Pahang, Malaysia.
Blance Ellyz Bongato combined forces with Ruth Joy Vinuya of Isabela province and Alphecca Gonzales of Cebu City to win the gold medal in the girls 14 team blitz.
The tournament features some promising players from the Asean region such as  Malaysia, Singapore, China, Australia and Vietnam.
The promising chess player from Davao City also got a silver in girls 14 team rapid event where she combined forces with Regina Quinanola of Cebu City and Vinuya.
The first time player in the prestigious tournament also took second place in the individual rapid division.
Before ending her memorable international chess campaign, Bongato also took the broze medal in the girls under 14 standard.
Bongata said she jsut did her best and enjoy the moment in her Asean chessfest participation.


Holy Child of Davao Places Second In 32nd SBP Passerelle Basketball Tournament National Finals


The Holy Child of Davao (HCCD) Reds has placed second to eventual champion San Beda in the recent 32nd SBP Passerelle Basketball
Tournament National Finals in  Cebu Coliseum, Cebu City over the weekend.
HCCD fell short against the favored and taller San Beda squad in their championship battle 68-51 to settle for runner-up honors in the tournament organized by Milo.
The second place finish is a huge improvement for HCCD who placed third in 2015.
In the championship game,  Chucky Pacifico led Holy Child with eleven points while James Belicario added eight points and eight rebounds.
Prior to their championship battle, San Beda has earlier beat HCCD in the elimination round 48-88.

San Beda Beats Holy Child of Davao In 32nd SBP Passerelle Basketball Tournament National Finals

The dream of Holy Child of Davao (HCCD) Reds to win the crown in the 32nd SBP Passerelle Basketball
Tournament National Finals in  Cebu Coliseum is off to a rough start.
HCCD was clobbered by San Beda College-Rizal 48-88 in the Passerelle (15-Under) division. Price Ray Alao finished with 16 points for San Beda College, while teammates
Antonio Lledo III, Naz Gabrielle San Juan, and John Elbert Lopez each handed nine points. San Beda had an eight-point lead
after the first frame before they broke away with a 14-2 run capped by a steal and an uncontested layup by Sebastian Troy
Valencia to make it 36-16 midway through the second quarter. San Beda did not look back from there and maintained a
solid lead throughout the third quarter before erecting the gap to 40 points at the end of the game.
HCCD got the slot to nationals finals after they beat the visiting Corpus Christi School of Cagayan de Oro City, 70-63, in last Sunday's finals of the
Best Center-organized 32nd Milo Passerelle-SBP Regional Finals held at the newly-refurbished Rizal Memorial Colleges Fil Oil Flying V Arena.

High School Bowling Tourney At NCCC B3 on December 9-16

Some of the promising young high school bowlers in Mindanao are set to join the Inter-High School Bowling Tournament organized by NCCC at the NCCC Mall B3 Bowling Lanes.
NCCC Mall B3 bowlfest will start on December 9 until the 16th of the same month.
The bowlfest is  open to the first 15 teams composed of junior high school or senior high school players.
NCCC Mall B3 office-in-charge for operations Antonio Venculador Jr. said they organized the bowlfest to promote bowling among the youth in Mindanao.
He said a  team shall be
composed of five members-all boys, all girls or mixed that will compete in a three-game elimination series en-route to the
finals set on December 16.
He added that the registration  forms are available at NCCC B3 Center Lanes.
To join the teams must present a B3 bowling receipt worth P300 for registration. The registration will end on December 8.
The champion team will get  P8,000 while the next two teams will get P5,000 and P3,000, respectively.

Holy Child Targets Better Finish In 32nd SBP Passerelle Basketball Tournament National Finals In Cebu

The Holy Child of Davao (HCCD) Reds is confident they can win the crown when the 32nd SBP Passerelle Basketball Tournament National Finals commences on Dec. 2 and 3 at the Cebu Coliseum.
HCCD will do their best to surpass their third place finish last year and bring some honor to Davao City.
The team got the slot to nationals finals after they beat the visiting Corpus Christi School of Cagayan de Oro City, 70-63, in last Sunday's finals of the
Best Center-organized 32nd Milo Passerelle-SBP Regional Finals held at the newly-refurbished Rizal Memorial Colleges Fil
Oil Flying V Arena.
The team coached by veterans Nestor Sorrosa and Roger Rabago is confident they can perform even better this year.
The champion team are composed of  Dataya Yassin, Rysan Villasinda, Chucky Pacifico, Anscar Mamac, Miggy Belicario, Roy Antalan,
Kyle Jamora, Francis Luke Corpus, Bryan Entero, Gabriel Borsige, Miguel Perez, Norman Mayola, Alexander Tila and Jan Curt Lobo.
