As Filipino tennis prodigy Alex Eala continues to make waves on the international stage, a new name is rising fast back home — Tennielle Madis, a gifted young athlete from M’lang, North Cotabato, who is now being hailed as the heir apparent to Eala.
Currently the No. 1 junior women’s tennis player in the Philippines and ranked 201 in the ITF Juniors World Ranking, Madis is steadily carving her own path to international prominence. Her impressive ascent in the junior tennis circuit has captured the attention of the country’s sports community, with many viewing her as the next big name in Philippine women’s tennis.
Madis recently took a major leap forward in her budding career by joining the Philippine national women’s team in the prestigious Billie Jean King Cup Asia/Oceania Group II, held in Malaysialast June 16. She stood shoulder to shoulder with seasoned players, including US NCAA Division II standouts Shaira Hope Rivera and Alexa Milliam, as well as fellow junior standout Stefi Aludo.
Coached by former national tennis stars Denise Dy and Bobi Angelo, the team faced tough competition from Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Indonesia, Northern Mariana Islands, Uzbekistan, and host Malaysia. Despite the challenges, Madis held her own, showcasing her skill, composure, and potential to be the future face of Philippine tennis.
Her inclusion in the national squad at such a young age is a testament to her hard work, talent, and the rising power of athletes from Mindanao, particularly in a sport historically dominated by players from urban centers.
As Tennielle Madis continues her climb, many are calling her the next torchbearer for Philippine tennis. With her eyes set on the global stage and a nation rallying behind her, she’s not just following in Alex Eala’s footsteps — she’s paving her own trail toward greatness.(Bob Braceros)
