DAVAO CITY---A promising chess player from Panabo City, Davao del Norte continues to make waves in online chess during this pandemic crisis.
James Catayas ruled the Dr. Marlonsky Age Group Grand Prix 13 and under division after scoring 6.5 points after seven rounds last September 20.
Catayas won P200 after winning the tournament featuring some of the top young chessers in the Philippines.
Keith Adriane Ilar of El Salvador City, Misamis Oriental took the second spot after scoring 5.5 points.
Ilar won P150.
The third place went to Ruelle Canino of Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental who scored five points.
Canino won P100.
Last July 30, Catayas also rules the first week of the Davao del Norte Online Chess Tournament.
Catayas emerged as champion after scoring 5.5 points in the tournament.
Catayas, a veteran of many local and national chess tournaments won P150 as a prize.
The second place went to another Panaboan Rodlee Catayas who scored 4.5 points.
Catayas won P100 as prize.
The third place went to Jerome Pullos also of Panabo City.
Pullos won P50 as a prize.
The weekly chess tournament was organized by the sports division of the province of Davao del Norte and features some of the top young chessers of the said province.
The winners in the weekly tournaments are set to meet in the grand finals where the prizes are bigger.
The Davao del Norte provincial sports office organized the tournament earlier to provide young chessers in the province the chance to hone their talents by facing other chessers in Davao del Norte. (Romeo Braceros Jr.)
