Sometimes in life, we will not have the desires of our hearts but still be very happy because we ended up serving many people.
That is precisely what happened to long-time Barangay Dumoy captain Jessie Mar Culaste, who has now served his beloved constituents for the past 21 years.
Culaste said that in 2002 after finishing his dentistry course, he wanted to pursue his profession and apply for a lateral entry in the Philippine National Police.
As he was mulling his career path, his mother offered him a chance to run as barangay captain to serve their barangay since it was an election year at that time.
Since he is focused on becoming a professional dentist and a police officer, he does not mind at first the suggestion of his mother.
However, some barangay leaders encouraged him to join the political race as barangay chief.
Despite this intense prodding, he is undecided since his political opponent is his good friend Alex Montejo.
After careful thought, he eventually decided to run, but he was not too keen on winning and would accept whatever fate would give him.
With solid support from his barangay and God's grace, he won the election and became a barangay captain at 28 years old.
Although becoming a barangay captain is not his first career choice, he loves it since he learned the value of genuine public service.
Since winning in 2002, Culaste has served Barangay Dumoy for the past 21 years, including today.
He said his secret to winning is his strong heart to serve his constituents, especially those in need.
Culaste said even today, he still makes it a point to personally do some dentistry work in the 28 puroks of his barangay since he loves personally serving the people in his barangay.
